Seeing this game released under Preservation program surprised me.
It appears none of the real issues were solved however. Here is a list of issues I'm aware of:
1. Crash on startup if current display's resolution list is too big.
2. Memory leaks in various moments if the graphics subsystem is not initialized properly.
3. Crash on starting to load any game mode from main menu if the disk the game is installed on is not formatted in a manner the game expects it to be. This may be a remnant of some DVD-check in a console version.
4. At least the main running animation of the game hero is not looped properly.
Here is a rough explanation of how bad these issues are:
1. If a display can support resolutions higher than 1080p, it is almost guaranteed to be affected.
2. Integrated Intel GPUs will trigger the game to have this problem. Though I'm not 100% sure, they are not the cause. It just happens that the game engine is badly programmed, and it could be a miracle it functions at all on most AMD/Nvidia GPUs.
3. If a disk is not ancient, was formatted under Windows 10 default settings, it is almost guaranteed to be affected.
4. It is inherently broken and it looks bad. Once you see it, you can't unsee it.
On Steam Discussions, I provided temporary fixes to some of those issues:
1. Fixed but user needs to edit the file according to current display and desired resolution. There is also an issue that requires config file to be edited by hand once, to solve the Settings menu crash after this.
2. Fixed at least for Intel GPU owners. Downside is that it requires changing one setting on each game startup. It could also help other GPU owners but I never tested this extensively.
3. Fixed but not publicly available. Once I realized the game has too many lingering issues I decided to wait for Capcom to do at least something.
4. There is no fix for this. I don't remember if console versions have the same issue or not.
More stuff that is personally unsettling for me:
1. The issue list is nowhere complete. Seeing how the game behaves and what kind of issues people are having, it's obvious for me that community will not be able to solve them all without the original game code.
2. Exactly same technical issues can be found in at least 3 other Capcom games (must've been using the same branch of the engine):
- Resident Evil Revelations
- Resident Evil Revelations 2
- Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
I tried to contact Capcom, even offered myself as free work force for this. It doesn't seem like they could hear me. Or maybe they are not very interested in fixing their products.
Now, seeing this game in this state on GOG, I can even see how I contributed to the image of the game being in a better state, a false image. Maybe at least GOG would've done a better job to really preserve this game if they saw it has too many issues, if there were more reports of it being broken. Wish I could've done more to raise awareness.
Can the game still be properly preserved? I think it needs serious treatment by Capcom themselves. Or maybe GOG has enough authority to raise awareness or acquire more tools from them to be able to do something.
