Seeing this game released under Preservation program surprised me.
It appears none of the real issues were solved however. Here is a list of issues I'm aware of:

1. Crash on startup if current display's resolution list is too big.
2. Memory leaks in various moments if the graphics subsystem is not initialized properly.
3. Crash on starting to load any game mode from main menu if the disk the game is installed on is not formatted in a manner the game expects it to be. This may be a remnant of some DVD-check in a console version.
4. At least the main running animation of the game hero is not looped properly.

Here is a rough explanation of how bad these issues are:

1. If a display can support resolutions higher than 1080p, it is almost guaranteed to be affected.
2. Integrated Intel GPUs will trigger the game to have this problem. Though I'm not 100% sure, they are not the cause. It just happens that the game engine is badly programmed, and it could be a miracle it functions at all on most AMD/Nvidia GPUs.
3. If a disk is not ancient, was formatted under Windows 10 default settings, it is almost guaranteed to be affected.
4. It is inherently broken and it looks bad. Once you see it, you can't unsee it.

On Steam Discussions, I provided temporary fixes to some of those issues:

1. Fixed but user needs to edit the file according to current display and desired resolution. There is also an issue that requires config file to be edited by hand once, to solve the Settings menu crash after this.
2. Fixed at least for Intel GPU owners. Downside is that it requires changing one setting on each game startup. It could also help other GPU owners but I never tested this extensively.
3. Fixed but not publicly available. Once I realized the game has too many lingering issues I decided to wait for Capcom to do at least something.
4. There is no fix for this. I don't remember if console versions have the same issue or not.

More stuff that is personally unsettling for me:
1. The issue list is nowhere complete. Seeing how the game behaves and what kind of issues people are having, it's obvious for me that community will not be able to solve them all without the original game code.
2. Exactly same technical issues can be found in at least 3 other Capcom games (must've been using the same branch of the engine):
- Resident Evil Revelations
- Resident Evil Revelations 2
- Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3

I tried to contact Capcom, even offered myself as free work force for this. It doesn't seem like they could hear me. Or maybe they are not very interested in fixing their products.

Now, seeing this game in this state on GOG, I can even see how I contributed to the image of the game being in a better state, a false image. Maybe at least GOG would've done a better job to really preserve this game if they saw it has too many issues, if there were more reports of it being broken. Wish I could've done more to raise awareness.

Can the game still be properly preserved? I think it needs serious treatment by Capcom themselves. Or maybe GOG has enough authority to raise awareness or acquire more tools from them to be able to do something.

Thank you for all the work you have put into providing us these fixes.
I am more than grateful. However, I don't think Capcom gives a shit at this point nor does gog. I mean....you've been giving these facts since 2017 on STEAM. They haven't even bothered to do anything except redirect customers to your fixes. Seems as though your work is good enough fix for them.

Thanks for sticking to this game to report issues. I haven't bought it on GoG yet because I'm concerned about supporting the state of the bugs we know of already. Can you confirm if the sector-size bug still exists in the GoG release? This can be easily tested with a VHDX partition.

I didn't buy it here either but there is no way it is solved here, right now. The initial startup crash must've been happening to most people before they can get to main menu, so it's less reported.

1

i would rather games were written expecting to not need insane modern hardware specs and without modern software sensibilities and run fast within those limits instead of compatible with everything and run like modern bloatware

laypeople frequently use the word 'optimize' to sound sophisticated talking about software - this is an actual example of an optimized game and engine - 'optimized for everything' is an oxymoron

2

Intel integrated 'iGPUs' are notorious for incompatibility issues and buggy drivers - they're ok for what they're designed for (which is not playing games) - this is not GOG's fault or Capcom's

it's like a bike manufacturer builds an entire sports bike but the new owner with modern health issues whining because he keeps crashing and getting boo boo then praising some hobbyist modder out of familiarity because he installs stabilisers and then whining and bitching and character assassinating the manufacturer and dealer even though they built and provided the entire bike that the owner enjoys racing - sometimes i don't even blame them for not releasing updates

3

512 disk and 2048 disc sectors has been international standard for decades since computers have been around - just because something is common now never meant it was ever good or part of something good - DRMs IMEs TPMs

i have this game running nicely on modern hardware and refurbished dumpster grade ancient PCs i literally got for free from a skip - except i also paid for all the optional junk DLC as it almost seems like stealing with the base game price at $7.58 released on summer sale

4

what is being discussed and demanded is upgrading and enhancing and extending - not preservation or bug fixes - if fickle gamers can't even get old school games to run nicely on their overpowered new computers that's their own competency and overcompensation issues - the devil does indeed cry

i could understand if people played on Playstation and Xbox and consoles but how is Steam even part of the equation do they have DRM and virus free offline installers ?

It's good that you have an opinion. What's important is that you believe it, champ (Nobody else does). If it were not a glaring issue, then GOG would not have agreed that it was and issued a statement of trying to fix it. That's also the stated goal of the preservation program. So...blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz. You sound like CNN. The irony is....we all have the game running.......thanks to the dude you are insulting...as have thousands over at STEAM. Typical hairy-palmed basement dweller seeking attention because women won't give it.

This is the first game I've ever encountered with such a ridiculously obscure issue. It wasn't even clear what the issue was. I just remember being able to play it years prior and started slowly working out what changed since then. And I do this professionally.

What are normal people expected to do when they buy a cool game they want to play and all their stuff is 4096 out the box?

According to you, nothing, apparently.

1. This has nothing to do with modern hardware or forward support. The part where the game enumerates screen resolution list is clearly affected by a programming bug. When your monitor tells the game how many resolutions it supports the game at some point fails to properly interpret that and breaks its own data responsible for other stuff. Now, I would rather control what data my hardware sends to the game just in case of such sad bugs, but in case with monitors - I can't. And you can't.

2. This has nothing to do with Intel. When the game crashes in one case, and doesn't, on the same hardware - you have to ask what is different. And the answer is - the fact that game settings were changed. Game settings are same. It's just that you went to the settings menu and decided to change them, then reverting back. That's not how GPU hardware bugs or GPU driver bugs manifest themselves.

3. If you know basic stuff about file system and applications, you have to agree that no game should care about how much bytes per sector your volume has. In case it does care, it should report something, not crash with a memory error. And if it really was important, it shouldn't work properly after few bytes were fixed by me in the code.

4. Preserving software that you sell in a way that makes it break on most systems is not a good service.

Also the original non-SE game version did not have any of these bugs.

Steam? The game was released on Steam many years ago, and never fixed properly by Capcom.
