So, I'm having the same problem as this guy.
When I reach the end area of the first section of the game (Tarsus Academy), if I try to save my game just crashes to desktop. Also, when I try to leave to Upper Seattle the same thing happens. This is very weird, because the game was running with no problems whatsoever before I reached that final area. I tried doing what yohny (cz) suggested but that didn't work. I also tried using the resolution hack from this site but the problem persists. So I pretty much can't play the game now. Fortunately, many years ago I completed this game, but I would like to be able to play it again, especially because I had a worse PC back then.
Anyone knows what I need to do to fix this problem?

The bug is gone, don't know why. False alarm, I guess...
