I recently installed Deus Ex on a 4tb external hard drive. It doesn't recognize the hard drive, and claims that there's no space and it can't save. I've looked for solutions everywhere to fix the problem. The only solution I've seen in Kentie's Launcher. While the Launcher allows you to save, it makes you save only in My Documents, and the process in changing the save directory is complicated. Kentie's Launcher also causes Deus Ex to be slow whenever I access the menu. I've heard the claim that Deus Ex wouldn't recognize the hard drive because the game was made in 2000. If that were the case, other games I've played on the hard drive which were made in 2000 or before would have the same problem. American McGee's Alice is the only other game I know of that has the exact same issue. Alice and Deus Ex were built on different engines, yet both are the only games I know of that mistake excess of space for lack of space. Isn't it be possible for GOG.com to edit Deus Ex's files so that it can recognize external hard drives more than 1 tb?

Yea people like to make up all kinds of shit.

In theory, yes, but in practice, no way in hell. GOG simply doesn't do that kind of bugfixing.

I'd recommend you partition your drive, or make a virtual drive on it just for Deus Ex.
Thanks clarry. I really appreciate your help. I can try the partition drive solution if I can. It's a shame GOG can't come up with a bug fix. If only fans had the means to fix this bug with a fan patch. Thank again for the help.

Another thing you could try is right-click the Deus Ex executable, click on Properties, then the "Compatibility" tab, under "Compatibility Mode,", Run This Program in Compatbility Mode, select Windows 7.

Half Life had an issue where it wouldn't run unless you did that because it could not properly detect hard drive space available.

Due to newer versions of Windows sometimes restricting access to files in some locations, it will by default use "My Documents" for save games, config files will also be copied from "Deus Ex\System\" and stored/used from "My Documents" for the same reason.

While using the Kentie Deus Exe, if you would rather use the games folder for saves/configs instead of "My Documents" you can start the game with the parameter "-localdata" excluding quotes.
Thanks for the suggestion, Grogger. Unfortunately, Kentie's launcher makes my version of Deus Ex slower, but I have tried it. Besides, I'm trying to keep my main hard drive free of excess space.

I did solve my problem, though. If you install on an external hard drive that is either 1 or 2 terabytes worth of space, you can save on that hard drive without any problems. If you install Deus Ex on external hard drives that are 3 tb or more, that's where the save problem happens. I installed Deus Ex on a 2 tb ext. hard drive, and it's fine now. American Mcgee's Alice also works well on hard drives 1 or 2 tb big.

I hope this discovery helps others with the same dilemma.

NedLand: Thanks for the suggestion, Grogger. Unfortunately, Kentie's launcher makes my version of Deus Ex slower...
When you say the Kentie Launcher makes Deus Ex slower when you access the menu, do you mean a momentary pause, because I remember encountering that and I don't think it's because of the Kentie Launcher but rather due to the Kentie D3D10 in combination with certain settings (though perhaps those settings can be set via the launcher but I don't think so).

I say this because I remember it happening while I was tweaking settings in the .ini (probably DeusEx.ini). I didn't think the pause in opening menus was worth it so I disabled/reverted the setting, though unfortunately I don't remember what that settings was. It was likely something related to graphics trying to improve visuals.

So I'm quite certain this is something that can be solved, again. I've uploaded my "DeusEx.ini" and "User.ini" here. You could backup yours and have a try with these (while using the kentie launcher and D3D10) to see if it solves the problem, or send me your .ini's while you're having the problem and I'll compare to mine to try fine the culprit again.

Also something to keep in mind, while it is possible for old software to incorrectly report free space, it's also possible for it to incorrectly interpret or lazily/poorly handle errors. There is a chance that the software didn't have permission to access the folder and basically conclude there's no more space. Ensuring the current user account and program in question has full read/write access to the folder may solve that problem (compatibility settings might also sometimes help).

I feel reasonable confident that you could have a fully portable version of Deus Ex, with the Kentie Launcher, D3D10 etc, that works on your external drive, or wherever else you may want to place it so long as folder permissions allow full read/write access. Then you can just zip/pack that up and not have to worry about reinstalling or troubleshooting, tweaking things next time you want to play.

Also if you're interested there are two other archives in that linked folder. One is for disabling the HDR effect that comes with the D3D10 wrapper as the HDR is extremely overblown and slow to react. Another contains a Reshade setup that adds a bit of bloom (I'm not a crazy bloom fan but some can help add something to this game)

Here's some screenshots of the game with that Reshade setup, though note the shots were taken before disabling the HDR so sometimes the bloom can look to powerful due to HDR, without the HDR it's at a subtle but noticeable level.
