I've had Deus Ex installed on my old Vista rig and re-installed it on my new computer with WIn8.1. Now, when I choose Training, the entrance hall is quite dark and I remember it being much brighter. I checked a YouTube video and it also has a brightly lit entrance hall, different than the one in the screenshot below. Is this normal or an issue with the graphic card/mode?

My screenshots are always that dark, but not the game itself.
I just did a few tests, and apparently the game is that dark when you play it in windowed mode. Fullscreen mode is much brighter.

Also, I guess you can't change the brightness in windowed mode.

Edit - Now the way I have been playing it seems too bright. Maybe it is supposed to be that dark?

Edit again - This person had problems with the game being too dark, and fixed it by switching to OpenGL.

Yet another edit - Now my game IS that dark and I can't fix it... Just ignore me.

I've dug myself into a pretty big hole here :P

After I reinstalled the game and chose the hidden OpenGL option in the setup window, the entrance hall is as brightly lit as I remember it. Thanks for the suggestion!

Regarding the general display, I also noticed that 640*400 seems to be the default resolution and any resolution higher than that will reduce the size of the GUI elements, but curiously 1280*960 displays them as big as intended again, just like 640*400 but with sharper textures.

So it seems OpenGL and a resolution of 1280*960 will finally allow me to enjoy the game as it was meant to be. :)

If you haven't already, download Kentie's launcher. It helps tweaking a lot of settings. I also strongly recommend his DirectX 10 renderer, it makes the game look a little better and just function better on modern computers (locked frame rate for example). My only problem with it is that some glass textures appear quite dark and opaque.
Good think I saw this question. I was already tired from the training session where I was unable to find the path to follow on the stealth part due total darkness.
