I am unable to play the Zodiac mod like I was able to with the retail version. Using an alternate launcher I am able to see Zodiac's main menu background (the green tackware logo) and the alternate menu music, however when I start a new game it still shows JC instead of Paul in the character creation screen, and once I start it's just the normal game.

Total-conversion mods like Zodiac have their own (game).ini and user.ini files. If you're trying to launch Zodiac by simply applying the Zodiac mod folders in Kentie's launcher, it won't work.

(Thank you for also providing me the impetus to download Zodiac again.)

Zodiac installs its .ini files to \DeusEx\System, so here's what you need to do.

1. Create a shortcut to your DeusEx.exe file from \DeusEx\System; place the shortcut wherever you want.
2. Open the properties of the shortcut. (Right-click on the shortcut; "Properties" will be the bottom item on the context menu.
3. In the "Target" field of the "Shortcut" tab, following the path to the executable (outside of the quotation marks, if there are any), add this: INI=Zodiac.ini USERINI=ZodiacUser.ini.
4. You'll end up with something like this in the Target field: "D:\Games\Steam\SteamApps\Common\Deus Ex\System\Zodiac.exe" INI=Zodiac.ini USERINI=ZodiacUser.ini

Hope this helps! You can also include full file paths to .ini files if you want, in case you want to keep your .ini files somewhere other than \DeusEx\System\.

Thanks, finally got it up and running. Another slight problem, whenever I'm at the menu, either at the main menu or by pressing esc during the game, the framerate drops horribly. I can't remember if it always did that as it's been a few years since I've played zodiac.

I had the same problem with the "Unnamed mod". The problem is that you have selected a rendering device that is not ok. Launch the 3D settings program and choose another device. OpenGL (which is the default) will not work if you don't have a good OpenGL emulator.
I had to tick the option "show unsupported devices" and that's where I found my direct3d card.

Been looking around for a while now with no luck, what is the 3D settings program called and where is it located?

Hmm, tricky..... There isn't one. DeusEx.exe shows these options only the first time you run it.
Uninstall, delete folder and re-install should get you to point zero.

You can also try deleting file "DeusEx.ini" in folder "Deus Ex GOTY\system" and the 3D settings window will appear next time you run it.
Thanks, that took care of the framerate problem.
