racofer: On the attached screenshot you can clearly see the message as well as "Connection Failed: Square Enix servers are currently unavailable. Try again later.".
This message is still present with an internet connection and the game launched through the Galaxy client ... therefore it should not be treated as an indicator to wether or not the DLC is working.

2) Launching without Galaxy and allowed the game executable through my firewall: DLC does not work;
3) Launching with Galaxy and blocked the game executable through my firewall: DLC does not work;
4) Launching with Galaxy and allowed the game executable through my firewall: DLC works.
I did a series of tests too after you're post and my results are nearly the same:
1) Launching without Galaxy and unplugged ethernet cable: DLC does not work;
2) Launching without Galaxy and plugged in ethernet cable: DLC does not work;
3) Launching with Galaxy and unplugged ethernet cable: DLC works;
4) Launching with Galaxy and plugged in ethernet cable: DLC works;
5) Launching with Galaxy and plugged in ethernet cable and blocked game executable: DLC does not work

I redid test number 3 several times but the dlc always worked for me. And add this to test number 5 ... this is just plain weird behaviour.

Can you try and do "test number 3" (see above) too?

But I agree with you this is DRM.

DarthDaedric: It seems like there's something wrong in general with the Non-Galaxy installer for the Season Pass because even after deleting all my saves, I can't access any of the DLC. It just says "Unknown" next to them on the menu and I can't select them.
avatar
racofer: I have tested installing the game through the offline installer and through galaxy, with the same outcome.

Launching the game directly without Galaxy results in the DLC being unavailable with an Unknown next to to them. On the attached screenshot you can clearly see the message as well as "Connection Failed: Square Enix servers are currently unavailable. Try again later.". However, launching the game through Galaxy with an active internet connection gets the DLC working. I have also tested blocking the executable in my firewall, which breaks the DLC as well with or without launching through Galaxy.

This is what I have tested, using either the offline installer or installing the game through Galaxy (in the case of the offline installer, I had imported the installation folder with Galaxy to test when using Galaxy).

1) Launching without Galaxy and blocked the game executable through my firewall: DLC does not work;
2) Launching without Galaxy and allowed the game executable through my firewall: DLC does not work;
3) Launching with Galaxy and blocked the game executable through my firewall: DLC does not work;
4) Launching with Galaxy and allowed the game executable through my firewall: DLC works.

So there is only one condition on which the DLC works, and that is when using Galaxy and letting the game contact the Square Enix servers, otherwise no deal. This is DRM.

Edit: for some reason I cannot see the screenshot? Anyway, this is an imgur link to it: https://i.imgur.com/LPmmjKE.jpg
Is there any possibility of testing one more possible combination to sate a remaining option that's still possible (although unlikely) which wouldn't quite rise to the level of DRM?

- Launching with Galaxy and allowed the game executable through your firewall, HOWEVER with network connection itself disabled (eg, wifi disconnected or network cable unplugged).

The reason I'm curious regarding this is because, firstly, the message regarding Square Enix servers is likely hard-coded; it doesn't know if its actually Square Enix servers it's trying to connect to. Secondly, GOG had to write a wrapper to intercept and interpret the games Steam API calls for Galaxy. There remains a possibility that the wrapper is also intercepting this network connection the game is making and handling it through Galaxy (or even directly in the wrapper) without needing to actually connect to remote servers. Blocking the game in the firewall could prevent it making this connection, so the wrapper couldn't pass it to Steam.

Now, I'm not honestly particularly hopeful that this is the case, but it would seem worthwhile testing. Although, my understanding is that this would still be DRM even though Galaxy can be used offline, it needs to go online to see if you own a game in order to add it to the client? (Not tested, I don't have any I don't own, but I've heard this is the case - if it's not, then I guess it wouldn't strictly be DRM, but would be an annoyance).

EDIT: Oh wow, while typing this, a post has just been added above testing exactly this scenario. Cheers mitcharts!

mitcharts: 3) Launching with Galaxy and unplugged ethernet cable: DLC works;
That kind of confirms it's just a matter of the wrapper handling the network connection, and not connection to Square's servers. So, can anyone confirm if Galaxy requires an internet connection to confirm you own a game before adding it? If so, DRM. If not - marginal. An annoyance, requiring an extra program to be installed, but not really DRM. Actually, I don't have Galaxy installed at the moment, so I'll just disable my internet connection, install it and try installing a game.

EDIT 2: Ok, so updated to confirm what, again, others have reported in the meantime - used an offline Galaxy installer, never connected, and indeed, DLC doesn't work simply having Galaxy installed; it needs to be running, which in turn means it needs to have connected to the internet at some point in time, meaning it's definitely DRM.

Hopefully GOG will fix this, rather than hand-waving it as "oh, that's just DLC, not the actual game". It's sold as part of the game package (either included with the Digital Deluxe Edition, or via the Season Pass), and it's certainly got DRM in place at present. I can forgive online (not LAN) multiplayer requiring online accounts since servers cost money, not to mention anti-cheats, so have never had a trouble with DRM for online play. But for offline single-player content, it's inexcusable. Fingers crossed they fix this. You can do it, GOG! :) I don't spend all that time on Facebook telling people who didn't ask, that they should be buying games from GOG, for nothing.

Crap,,, I'm inclined to agree with both of you the evidence suggests either Galaxy is either bridging to the SquareEnix servers or mimicking some of their behaviour to fool the game into thinking it is there. Either way Galaxy is not an optional thing which is something GOG have always asserted it is.

I've been working on the assumption of human error for these problems. My guesses have been along the lines the offline installers were misconfigured and running galaxy was correcting that problem. What you guys appear to have discovered is I was wrong.

I am OK with being wrong just very disappointed in what has been done here and hope GOG will make a public statement acknowledging there is a problem and confirm that they will be fixing this.
this is not right, this is the first time ive been on the forums for GOG, does the company actually respond to people and problems? because regardless of the price this isnt what i was promised when i gave them my money, im missing half the items that were supposed to be in the season pass and i cant even access them withoout using always on drm, which GOG is definitively not supposed to have.

they better fix this asap, there is false advertising on the season pass and deluxe editions and this drm has gotta go

Agreed, it still shows regardless of the launch conditions. Probably a leftover from the conversion to the GOG version.

Interesting results. I have performed the same tests you did, and reached the same results:

1) Launching without Galaxy and unplugged ethernet cable: DLC does not work;

- Launching with Galaxy and allowed the game executable through your firewall, HOWEVER with network connection itself disabled (eg, wifi disconnected or network cable unplugged).
To my understanding, this is the current situation:

- Blocking the game in your firewall, with or without Galaxy: DLC does not work;
- While allowing the game through your firewall:
1) Without Galaxy: DLC does not work;
2) With Galaxy: DLC works;

So there is a Galaxy dependency for the DLC to work, and the game executable probably connects to the GOG Galaxy client for authentication of the DLC. Still, this is not acceptable behavior and the DLC should work regardless of having Galaxy active.

If the Deluxe/DLC pack really requires Galaxy to run, GOG must fix this. A lot of GOG users don't want to use Galaxy at all with their GOG games.

Agreed it has always been stated Galaxy is "optional", not mandatory. GOG have let the definition of DRM slip over the last few years. Some games utilise mechanisms for online connectivity (and in some cases even LAN play) that by most reasonable definitions would constitute DRM.
The broad working definition now appears to be DRM free for single player games, if even this line is being blurred, something has gone very wrong with GOG.
I would still like to believe this is simply a screw-up made either by GOG or the developer but TBH ordinary customers shouldn't be having to try and experiment with products they brought in good faith & sold as DRM free to figure out if they had been mislead. All of this should have been ironed out before the games went live for sale.
I can't get the DLC to work even with the game executable allowed in my Firewall. No matter what I do I only see the "server not available" message on the main menu.

I agree. It is probably some oversight regarding the wrapper method they have employed. Still, you need Galaxy running, not merely installed, for the DLC authentication to work, which is not acceptable either.
@Berzerk2003
First of all the message on the main menu can be ignored. Secondly, you have to start the Galaxy client and launch the game through it -- this is mandatory for the DLC to work.

And than in the main menu under "Jensen's Stories" you can select and start the DLC story missions.

This is absolutely not right, and GOG will have to fix it. I have faith they will though. It's not like previous issues where it was just some dormant files or whatever, it's actual DRM that violates their promise to consumers. I'll give them some time to fix it before I get angry though, and you should too.
Anybody test the game on a computer without Galaxy ever having been installed and seeing if the DLC works? Galaxy has had some strange interactions with some games if you have galaxy installed and use the standalone installer.
Ok so this is what I see under "Jensen's Stories" (see attached pic). I'm pretty sure that all of this was already there before I allowed the exe in my Firewall and started the game through Galaxy.

The question I have now is where do you find the "Covered Agent Pack" stuff and the "Assault” and “Tactical” packs, which include various weapons and items?

the items dont exist, the weapons are in a storage tab on the left of the items screen unless you dont let the thing though your firewall via gog galaxy
