they say they are almost done but who knows, it's been years since it was started.

I'd suggest checking out Overload. Much better game and made by the original Descent creators.

Have you heard of Star Citizen? Same people.
By now the Servers and their webpage are down.
This also was on Kickstarter and STEAM in Early Access, after a while they removed it from STEAM ( to get rid of the negative reviews). They stopped updating their Early Access builds with proper content and shifted all the content updates to yet another Pay-into Beta called 'The Underground' or some other stuff.
It has been in development for like 5 years and recently they went to a new publisher called Little Orbit and shifted focus to also make console versions.
They announced in January that the game is done and will release 'SOON'.
5 months of radio silence now and the Early Access client can't be played anymore since they killed the API servers. (except for a AI training match).

I think it is safe to say , given the trackrecord of the people involved, that this game has been abandoned. Descendent Studios website was taken offline aswell.

It's a shame! I bought this game very early in its development and all the money they got out of KickStarter, STEAM Early Access, their Pay-In Underground and the publishers dough, seemed to have fizzled into nothing.

The game that materialized as far as I could experience wasn't in good shape either. Controls were wonky and it didn't really have the DESCENT feel they were going for. First it was a Multiplayer only title (shitstorm ahead) then they kinda bolted on some single player content, which has never seen the light of Early Access builds.

GOG should look into this, might not be the best idea to still have it on preorder.

Even their Twitter and Youtube have not been updated for 6 months plus.
They used to post dev diaries pretty regular but that went dead also.
The other site that has got the game for sale 'Gamer' something i forget, their have been posts in their forums asking for 'some' updated information and its 'radio silence' their also.

I bought into this a year or so ago and was really hoping to see it complete and released(still am though not holding my breath at all) because i felt what was available, although a little janky could have been awesome by now if it 'has' actually been developed more the past year but they never showed us anything more.

I would certainly not advise anyone to drop any money on it at this point unless you have some kind of cast iron gaurentee you will get your cash back if this never releases, i think GOG refunds pre orders but check first for sure but in all honesty just wait and see.

I didn't know that the Dev who was working on this was from the same team as Star Citizen Devs, kinda alarm bells should be ringing already in all honesty.

Edit.
Just found a link to a recent thread with the Dev explaining whats going on or reason for lack of whats going on.

I may be biased, but at least some of these people worked hard to put out Conquest: Frontier Wars (which started life under Chris Roberts' Digital Anvil, back when he had to answer to a publisher) when Microsoft canned the project, before they took it to Ubisoft to get it finished and released. That is one of my most favorite games ever and I know the developers pushed to get it through and out into the world. Their time working on Star Citizen was also surprisingly short, but perhaps not surprising now that there's been more info about the troubled going-ons at the offices there. Perhaps they left because they wanted to work on a game and release it without all the drama and office politics. Unfortunately...

This news doesn't surprise me, as I've heard similar stories of those with too big a head on their shoulders and with a little too much greed in their heart trying to snatch away something other people worked hard on so that they can release it themselves and claim whatever money it makes as their own without having to pay the actual developers. Even easier with a barely advertised product and little-known group of developers that an even lesser known publisher can try to pull a fast one on.

It's awful and certainly reprehensible.

To be honest they deserve to have their work stolen given they blamed the steam community of all things for the games failure. It just flat out sucked. Instead of taking the onus onto themselves of realizing they made a bad egg they blamed everyone around them under the sun publisherr included. Overload is the unofficial sequel now
