No matter how I configure my mouse, whether sensitivity or DPI, I can't seem to get past this odd mouse input. What basically happens is that I can move the mouse a tiny amount, and it responds with more movement than when I move it at higher, more normal (I think) speeds. And it seems to fluctuate when it does this. But either way, I seem to turn more slowly than I remember being able to turn originally. Maybe my memory's just foggy since I was 6 last time I played it natively, or maybe I'm just getting mixed up with D2 or D3.

Anyway, how can I "make it normal" I guess? Mouse is a Logitech G5, if that matters.

Are you using one of the emulators like D2X-XL or Rebirth? Or are you using the base program?

I suspect the issue has to do with modern mice handling acceleration in a different way from what old-school Descent expects. When Descent was released, the speed at which your mouse moved was irrelevant, only the distance it traveled affected anything. My Logitech doesn't allow you to disable that, and I doubt yours does either.

If you aren't using an emulator, you really should try one. I've only ever used D2X-XL but apparently Rebirth is good too. They really bring the games up to modern speeds in more ways than one. If you are using an emulator, just try digging through the control settings in the program itself.
It does sound like an acceleration issue, I'd be surprised if you can't disable that. With a vanilla driver, under Mouse Properties -> Pointer Options disable "Enhance pointer precision" which is basically just acceleration.

I don't have the GOG version myself but I believe it uses DOSBox, so you might try settings here:

http://www.dosbox.com/wiki/Dosbox.conf

Particularly the sdl sensitivity setting, that might help as well.

I would second the recommendation of D2X-XL or Rebirth. If you want a somewhat more original experience out of the box, Rebirth seems to have the edge there.
I am using Rebirth, very nice for what it does. Before now I'd only tried D2X-XL, which is more feature-rich but also slightly more difficult to set up, and seems to be less stable on my system. I'd actually owned both games for a while, but not the expansion for D2, and I worried about what I'd do if I lost my discs. $6 for everything I had and more in a handy downloadable package was literally a small price to pay. :D

I never use acceleration with the mouse, it messes with my head as much as it does the hand:pointer speed ratio, so that can't be the problem.

I had skipped to using Rebirth, so I've tried the base version again. The issue doesn't seem to be there, or at least far less pronounced. The ship still turns slower than I'd like, but judging from the keyboard, that would seem to be its maximum turning. Still doesn't solve the issue from when I use Rebirth, though. I'll try changing some unrelated settings, maybe lowering ( D: ) the resolution, see if any of those makes a difference.

---post-test---

Well, this is now me. The problem seems to be totally gone after changing the resolution a few times, though I haven't got a clue why. Ah well, guess it's one of those things where talking to other people makes you think of things you didn't think of before.

Now if only I could find a keyboard that lets me press more than 2.5 buttons at once, maybe I could stop struggling to keep 50 shield units on Rookie difficulty. :|
For the keyboard I'd suggest a Microsoft Sidewinder ;) (Or you could invest in a joystick...I just recently made the switch myself)

As to the mouse issues...I'm not sure why it would be very different between Rebirth and the original...I do know however, that to increase sensitivity you need to lower your DPI setting. And make it really low to lower the sensitivity. There's a post about it in the Rebirth thread from awhile back...I'll find it and post it here if you'd like.

You also might wanna look into the new flight-sim mouse in 0.57.1. It's a different take on how to use the mouse in Descent without and kind of hack like mouselook :)
