It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

Johnmourby: ... they onlt offer one drivevr for my card and operating system. I downloaded it successfully and play Tourchlight 2 off it for a bit. I noticed no difference one way o the other..

I hope this means you can now tell me how I could check for OpenGL on my machine (I've tried the 'Search Files and Programs' search eninge in the Windows 7 Start launcher. that comes up with nothing) and if I don't have it (which seems to be the case) where I can download it from.
Well, as you used the site to download the driver (it will only offer one for your card and OS unless you use the archived and beta drivers option but you don't need to do that) and installed it, we at least know you have the latest drivers for your 660Ti.

Also, those drivers support OpenGL 4.4, so the necessary libraries are on your machine.

Just to double check, though, navigate to C:\Windows\System32 on your machine and you should find a file called opengl32.dll (well, as you say you aren't very tech savvy I'm guessing you have file extensions hidden so it will just say opengl32). If that file is there, which it very much should be, then OpenGL is present on your machine.

Looking at CDN_Merlin's reply, it might be helpful if you can take some screenshots of the Descent 3 launcher setup screen so that we can see what you are doing with it.
IN D3 launcher, click setup and goto the video tab.

Check my screenshots attached to see what I get.

I checked and you're right. The file is there on my computer. Here is a screen shot of what the launcher looks like (Ignore the screwy colours, it only looks like that because of compatibility mode)

Hopefully you can see that in his screen shots CDN_Merlin has an extra driver option I don't have. Maybe I should try downloading this Driver?

If you click "redetect rendering devices" and select the 3 options, does it come back with 2 choices?
Yes, as per CDN_Merlin, let us see what you get when you redetect with all three checkboxes ticked.

If that still doesn't work, I wonder if it would be easier just to get it running in 3DFX mode using nglide? I don't know how well that works, though.
What pc are you running? Or is it a laptop?

Windows 7 is my operating system. the manufacture ladled on the actual PC is Zalman. and no I'm not using a laptop. I'm using a large PC.

You misunderstand me. I With all three selected I'm only given two options; Direct3D Primary Display Driver or nothing.
When I deselect Direct3D it only offers me nothing.

I have. I sent you a screen shot. It shows that with all three selected I'm given to options Direct3D primary Display Drivers or No Device Selected. Nothing else.
ok let's try this.

Click the START button
Type DXDIAG and hit ENTER.
Once the screen pops up it will run a diagnostic of your system.

Once it's done, just take a screen shot of the main result window.

It should look like the pics attached.

Okay. I hope this is what you are after.

Ok, so your system is more than capable of running any game. You should be able to follow my earlier posts about redetecting the type of software you can run in D3. I can do both openGL and Direct3D and so should you.

I would suggest going back to my post about the launcher and seeing if maybe there was a step you missed. Otherwise I'm clueless as to why you are stuck on Direct3D only.

Johnmourby: Ok. I'm new to this game and there are two problems I need help with.

1: Graphics. I've gotten the graphics to a decent state but reading menus is still a problem. What I keep reading on these threads is "Set Descent 3 to OpenGL".......... Okay....... How do I do that? As far as I know my computer does not have it. When I go into setting and scan for it all it finds is direct3D

Also will OpenGL improve the graphics or resolution? The graphic are kind of grey and lifeless compared to the screen shots and the game's maximum resolution is 1600 by 1200. it would be cool to get the to look nicer without modding.

2: The Mouse. I'm playing this with a mouse and keyboard and I've got a set up I like, mostly... The mouse seems to be automaticly inverted so forward is down and back is up. I would like to be able to re-invent the mouse to the way it is in most FPS games. It confuses both my head and hand.

Thank you for reading.
Let me explain the problem with opengl driver... I suspected that it is issue with Descent 3 series... I found that it screwed up my screen.... automap screwed up.... I downloaded the "glide wrapper" it worked very well... suggest that you use the glide selection not D3D or OpenGl... I found it working very well.

So where is the glide wrapper found? TX
