Hi all,

After reading the disappointing news that GoG and Steam were forced to remove Descent I II and 3 due to Interplay being bastards to Parallax, I scoured the web and found a copy of the original CDs for the Definitive Edition on Amazon and bought the last copy.

It's on its way to me now.

What I would like to do is work with those of you who have bought the game to try to figure out how to convert my copy into what I would get had I been able to buy it and install from my GOG library.

I'm NOT talking about having you send me the game files (other than config files).

Rather, I would like to make a tutorial for anyone who, like me, has the original CDs but does not own a Steam-based or GOG-based copy, but who wants to play the games.

I'm available on multiple communication services (skype, teamviewer, facebook, steam, etc) for real time collaboration, which would be preferable, but willing to do it strictly via forum posts if that's what it takes.

Anyone interested, please reply here.
I'd be willing to send you the DOSBox config and such if you really want it...

But honestly I'd recommend using a source port. The Rebirth installer linked in the FAQ here will work with the original CD's.

Can you go into detail about what "source" port means? Does that mean it's the same game, but built against the Source engine from Valve? Or is it that someone got access to the source code legally, somehow, and compiled against modern OS?
Yes, the source code for D1 and D2 was released by Parallax software, and they have been compiled for modern OS's fixing a lot of old bugs in the process as well as enhancing graphics slightly and enabling muiltiplayer.

The main source port is Rebirth, and its multiplayer mod Retro (Retro is what most people use for multiplayer).

You can download the installers for these (you only need either Rebirth OR Retro) here: https://www.gog.com/forum/descent_series/the_unofficial_dxx_rebirth_installer_released

Let me know if you have any questions or need any help!

It's option #2. The Source Code was released to the public. Some people took it, updated it and released it as Rebirth so everyone can enjoy it on new PCs instead of having to buy old Pentium's or 486's to play them on.
Thanks again (just as in the other thread). You guys have been extremely helpful!
