The Redbook audio included with the GOG version of Descent II is from
"Descent I and II: The Definitive Collection" which is different from the original soundtrack.
Although missing 4 tracks from the original soundtrack and presented in a different order,
the tracks included in the Collection are longer versions remixed. For those that miss the
original soundtrack or if you want an extra 11 minutes of Redbook audio, you can build a
"hybrid" of the 2 providing the best from both soundtracks. The general approach to this
will be ripping the audio and the DATA track from the GOG (Definitive Collection) version.
Next we rip the additional tracks from the original Descent II CD. Then we build the "hybrid"
soundtrack by renumbering the tracks in the GOG version to the original track order and
adding the tracks from the original Descent II.
The Following lists detail the 2 original soundtracks and the resultant Hybrid Enhanced
Soundtrack.
1. First list is the Original Descent II track layout
2. Second list is the GOG or "Descent I and II: The Definitive Collection" track layout
3. Last list is the Hybrid Enhanced Soundtrack combining the best from both
soundtracks.

There are 19 attached PNG's for this guide. Right click on the 2 attachment links and
chose "save link as" and download. Change their extensions from PNG to ZIP and extract
to follow along.
1. Mount the file "DESCENT_II.inst" in a virtual drive such as "DAEMON Tools." The files
"DESCENT_II.gog" and "DESCENT_II.inst" are the same thing as a BIN-CUE with
renamed file extensions. This BIN-CUE CD image is located in the GOG "Descent II"
directory.
2. Browse to the mounted CD image and copy the data track (track 01) to a temp directory.
(See "1.png" attachment)
3. Use a CDDA ripper such as "Exact Audio Copy" or EAC and rip the subsequent tracks
(tracks 02 - 05 and 07 - 09) to a separate temp directory. When finished unmount
"Descent_II.inst."
(See "2.png" attachment)
4. Rip the CDDA from the original Descent II CD that will be apart of the new hybrid
soundtrack to separate temp directory. You only need to get the four missing tracks
(Glut, Crush, Untitled, and Haunted) and Track 07 "Ratzez." The track "Ratzez"
included in the original soundtrack is a little longer than the one in the Collection.
(See "3.png" attachment)
5. Now build the new hybrid soundtrack in a separate temp directory. This will comprise
of all the GOG tracks except Track 06 (Ratzez), the four missing tracks from the
original Descent II (Track 04 Glut, Tracks 08 - 10 Crush, Untitled, and Haunted), and
the longer version of "Ratzez" (Track 07 on Descent II disc). You will need to also renumber
the tracks from the GOG image according the original soundtrack layout (see list "Hybrid
(D2 + GOG)" above).
(See "4.png" attachment)
6. Since all of the raw assets have been collected and sorted now it is time to construct
the new "Mixed Mode" CD with the Enhanced soundtrack (first track being data and
subsequent tracks in CDDA). For this example I'll use Nero since it is commonly bundled
with OEM drives. Start Nero Burning Rom and select "Mixed Mode" CD. The attached
PNG's 5 - 9 show the selections to make in different dialog box tabs.
(See "5.png" to "9.png" attached)
Note: Make sure you de-select "Remove silence from the end of audio tracks" as
depicted in the attached "8.png."
7. Once Nero boots up select "Image Recorder" for Burner type at top of page.
(See "10.png." attachment)
Next browse to the temp directory where you copied the data track from the GOG
image and drag it to the "Data" track section of Nero.
(See "11.png" attachment)
8. Next we need to display the "Audio" tracks portion of Nero by clicking the large
grey bar titled "Audio."
(See "12.png" attachment)
Now we need to browse to the temp directory where the new hybrid soundtrack
was built and drag those tracks into the Audio tracks portion of Nero.
(See "13.png" attachment)
9. Next select burn and dialog box will come up asking you where to save the image
file. Name the image "DESCENT_II.nrg"
(See "14.png" attachment)
10. Now we need to convert the Nero image format (NRG) to BIN-CUE format
readable by dosbox. This can be done either by mounting the image file
"DESCENT_II.nrg" and re-imaging it with a burner application that natively
supports BIN-CUE (like CDRWin) or by using a utility that will convert a NRG to a
BIN-CUE format (like UltraISO, MagicISO, ISOBuster, etc.). For this example I will
use "MagicISO."
(See "15.png" and "16.png" attachments)
11. Next rename the file extensions from BIN and CUE to GOG and INST.
Rename "DESCENT_II.bin" to "DESCENT_II.gog"
Rename "DESCENT_II.cue" to "DESCENT_II.inst"
(See "17.png" attachment)
12. Now you must open the "DESCENT_II.inst" file in Notepad and edit the file extension
from BIN to GOG.
(See "18.png" and "19.png" attachments)
Note: Final cue sheet should look like "19.png" attached.
Once completed copy over the new Enhanced Soundtrack GOG image files to the GOG
"Descent 2" folder.
As a side note you can do this with your original Descent II disc if you still have one. With a
full DATA track from the original CD the total run time is right around 73 minutes (under
the CD-R clip of 79 minutes.

Sounds pretty complicated. Will this let me play the tracks at least as I remember the game? I believe Level 1 had Glut, Level 2 had Gunner Down, and Level 5 had Crush.
Also, is there any way I can adapt this to one of the ports, DXX-Rebirth or D2X-XL? Thanks.
Finally, if others want, they can get the Vertigo Series disc and get extended versions of Crush and Untitled. Haunted is also in there, but also includes a extra segment that...I wish was never there. For those who want to know what I'm talking about, look up the origins of the original song by Type O Negative.
