Understood, Karx. And hey, it's your project and your website. I think it could use a little tweaking, but if you don't desire to do that, then that's your decision. =)
I'm probably going to start using the Mac OS X version of D2X-XL. I've used it on Vista Ultimate and it's just too much for this little MacBook to handle (even dynamic lighting causes the FPS to plummet). Problem is an Intel GMA950 integrated graphics chip, which basically is enough 3D acceleration to meet the "3D Acceleration" requirement on 12 year old computer games. =P
I don't know. D2X-XL is a marvel of programming and technical skill, but with the limitations of my overpriced and underpowered Apple, Rebirth is my standard pick, as I can't really do much else with D2X-XL than add some minute lighting effects.
That being said, DLE-XP is boss. =)
And thanks, I must have tried 1.12 last, and back when I used it regularly, I used 1.7 I believe, so I know there are quite a few new changes.
Thanks for the hard work and detailed response, Karx.

A web site remake simply is beyond what I can afford in time and energy, that's all. If I had some website building guru create a remake for it, I'd gladly accept it.
D2X-XL will probably run at reduced settings only on your integrated gfx chip set. In that case, CPU power will rather be the limiting factor, as with dynamic lighting light has to be recomputed every frame for all lights that can change brightness and/or position.
Btw, D2X-XL gives you more than just colored lighting. It's not just me who absolutely loves the smoke effects, and I recommend trying to copy textures/d2x-xl/smoke-soft.tga over textures/d2x-xl/smoke.tga to get a softer and more transparent smoke effect - I think it just looks marvellous.
It may be a good idea to register on my forum in case you are having more questions regarding D2X-XL tweaking or DLE-XP. You'd be welcome. :)

RenFraggle: I just bought Descent 1&2 and managed to set up your d2x-xl. From what I can tell, it works great. I have a question about downloading the hires resources. The install guide points me to the general downloads page for hires sounds and models. I go to the homepage, and use the menu on the left and click on Downloads. There I can find binaries for all OS available, a source repository, archives, a descent 2 demo, and 1 hires model. I don't see anywhere else on the menu for downloads. Am I looking in the right place?

Edit- Nevermind. The side menu wasn't showing all the options from the page I was on. I found it.
In reference to navigation on the D2X-XL site, I too was having issues finding the most referred to (semi-official?) "hires"(high-resolution) textures, models and sounds, so I figured I'd post the links and navigation required.

Using the site menu (found on the left side) associated with the "Installation Guide" page (it seems to be an embedded page, so I cannot find a specific URL for it), click on the first link "Home". Then, proceed to the site menu on the left again on which you'll find the bolded subheading "Downloads" and below it the appropriate "Hires Models" and "Hires Textures"... but no 'Hires Sounds' however (I will get to this on the following paragraph).

As a more straight-forward method of obtaining these "hires" resources, go to the "D2X-XL quick installation guide (MS Windows)", found in the D2X-XL help forums. They are now more appropriately labelled, "(medium resolution)", as you may have noticed from the "Hires Textures" page that the most recent resource was from 2008 (whether these packages are more up-to-date I do not know). The links are neatly arranged, including the aforementioned "hires sounds" and a (semi-official?) "Descent mission pack".

Edit: There are any embedded pages with different associated "site menus" not just the "Installation Guide", so let me start over somewhat in my explanation of where you need to go.

If, like myself, you are looking at the sitemap and can't find the "hires" resources, you can go to the "Home" link and check the site menu from there. However, I recommend just using the forum page, as everything (included required sound files) are more readily available there.

Edit2: To further confuse you, there is another reference "Install Guide" page, with a proper URL, which I recommend ignoring and just sticking to the embedded pages, as it just further constipates navigation. That site may be in need of some clean-up >.> .

Edit3: Er... The Installation guide link karx11's Forum signature provides... probably the best one, outside of the help forum stickies.

Disclaimer: Most of the information gathered here by myself is inferred rather than absolute, and thus I apologize for any misinformation and welcome any corrections necessary.
