It's great to get new players into the series but don't you think they should throw old fans a bone too? It feels a bit weird to think that players who skipped out on 1&2 are being rewarded while old-timers don't get anything special. Anyone feel the same way?
Arrrrgh.....

How about discount for Deponia 3 for those who have purchased 1 and 2 in the past!
I wouldn't consider this sale of Deponia with parts 1 and 2 as being free, but rather as a 66% deal for the series to promote part 3. People who didn't buy Deponia 1 and 2 yet are rather unlikely to buy part 3 nor is it likely that they will buy part 1 or 2 anytime soon I'd think. This sale gives them a very good incentive to spend some money on Deponia though and 66% sales aren't that uncommon on digital distribution platforms either. I wouldn't even be surprised if we'd see a 75% off offer around Christmas or so. Especially when taking into account that both part 1 and 2 were already on sale on Steam iirc.

But anyway, you always pay a premium price if you want to play a game early to its release and sooner or later they all drop in price and become cheaper. Even more so the less popular a game or genre is. And unfortunately point&click adventures aren't very popular, at least compared to other genres.

So I dunno. Nothing out of the ordinary I would say. Just look at Skyrim or BF3 with all their DLCs and how cheap they have become, especially when there's a sale going on. Furthermore the Deponia 3 promo sale only lasted a few days and is already over again anyway. vOv

Well, you kind of got the discount too! Would you have bought it you would have gotten gift codes for Deponia 1 and 2 and on top of that you wouldn't have paid more for Deponia 3 either. Actually compared to my local retailers you would still save roughly 50% - even without any sale going on - just by buying Deponia 3 from gog. I think that's still pretty good. :)

Offering the whole thing for $20 a year later (not to mention upon release of the last episode) is kinda interesting way to reward loyal followers who would end up paying $60 for the whole series. What message are developers sending us? Like it's actually better to wait until last episode comes out since we would get all the previous episodes free anyway?

And Dev gets 70% cut at steam sale and 30% cut with local retailer (http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2011/0228/technology-gabe-newell-videogames-valve-online-mayhem.html), so even if local retainer charges twice more we end up giving same amount of money to the developer so Dev is not really doing us a favour by releasing it here.

EDIT: I'll wait for 50% sale for the Deponia 3 rather than buying it upon release like I did with 1 and 2.
I'd be happy if they could give us 25% discount for each previous Deponia title I've owned. Or just release the last episode for $20 and give special deal of $40 for the whole franchise.

As someone new to the series this was a great deal for me. At their baseline pricepoint of $20 per game people are less likely to try out Deponia on a whim. I assume that everyone has a sizeable backlog of games to play while they can wait for a sale.

As for burning previous customers I can see both sides. From their standpoint they want to make money so it is preferable to sell you the entire bundle. You are getting the same deal as someone new; but they are just repeat licenses of games you already own. On the other hand I can sympathize with the concept of 'complete my album', but without a total bundle price there would not be a good reference point. I suppose they could offter an arbitrary discount, but that would probably spur the same sort of complaint. (i.e.- $5 off is a slap in the face!)

You are advocating for new customers to have to pay more than past customers. At $40 it would go back on the wishlist until a better sale. Also with a series people are less likely to start at the sequels & I assume that is more applicable to point & click adventures.

Pricing is always temporary. I don't think we have context to say what would have been in their best interest in terms of generating revenue. Your formula appears to get less money from past customers and lost revenue from potential customers.

You misunderstood me. My suggestions were:

- keep "get Deponia 3 for $20 and get 1 +2 for free" deal, but for those who already own previous episodes, offer some loyalty discounts, say 25% per title.

- sell Deponia 3 for $20, but also offer a $40 deal for new customers wanting to buy complete deponia collection.
Anyway, it's not really a big deal. I support any developer that's putting out point-and-click adventures!

I understand the motivation for offering 1&2 free; still, it would have been nice to see a gesture towards old fans, maybe not financial, but small additional content or some such.

In any case, I'm not sure if it's GOG that's offering the deal or the developer/publisher, so the point may be moot. GOG owes no loyalty to people who previously bought 1&2, and they can't really bundle in any incentives other than price discounts.
