It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

I'm a hair away from slamming my head against a wall.

I've tried everything I could look up to get Demonicon to work. I just tried uninstalling and putting it on another drive and going through each step again. And it seems like half of today's internet isn't aware of my problem.

Reinstalled (C drive)
Deactivated antivirus for verify & run
Added antivirus exceptions for .exe files
Closed browser
Shortcut made with -dx9 added to Target in Properties
Run as admin
Run compatibility mode (for each version of Windows available)
Installed a codec (K-Lite, deinstalled)

OS/Sys: Win11, 64-bit
Video - AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT
CPU - AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 6-core
RAM - 32GB
Sound - AMD Streaming Audio
Space for days
1600x900 screen

So it starts as a background process, gets suspended and then closes. I don't have config files, it's that bad. So if a fix suggestion requires going into a config/ini file, you'd have to provide it for me. But I do have logs.

With shortcut -dx9, I get 6 resource leaks at the end.

Without shortcut, the leaks are still there, but the game does try to start according to the log:
WARNING: Starting game (MainThread|GameLauncher::start|src\users\default.cpp|193) time:2.801261 (4:6:45.758)
but it gets the "access violation" exception. I don't know what this stuff means.

I had the same issue.
I am 99% sure the cause is windows update 24H2.
Downgrading to 23H2 solved the problem for me.

Yes, something in Windows 2H24 update breaks in it. The game works on my Windows 10 and 11/2H23 laptops, but not those with Windows 11 2H24.

This is what I wrote to the Demonicon thread in the main forum, so it appears Kalypso is hoping MS to fix its update which affects apparently many Windows games.

============

This was a reply from Kalypso support, pasted to Steam forums on 10 Feb:

"Thank you once again for bringing the issue with Demonicon: The Dark Eye to our attention. We truly appreciate your patience and support while we investigated this matter.

We’re pleased to share that we’ve made progress in reproducing the reported behavior and have been able to narrow down its cause. Our findings indicate that the issue is linked to Windows 11 Update 24H2, as it only occurs on systems with this update installed and does not appear on the previous version (23H2).

Unfortunately, this means that resolving the issue is currently beyond our direct control. It appears that this update has affected multiple games and applications, and Microsoft is aware of the situation. We have also reached out to our partners to gather more information about a potential fix. Rest assured, we will keep you informed as soon as we have any updates.

We sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding, and we’ll be in touch as soon as we learn more. If you have any further questions in the meantime, please don’t hesitate to reach out."

So Kalypso is apparently waiting for Microsoft to resolve the issue.
Damn. No fix, but I guess this tells me what I need to know. Fingers crossed Kalypso and frens can work it out. Good to hear that MS are talking back. If this isn't the only game affected then MS ought to roll back the culprit change in their next update.
does anyone know if this issue has been resolved without having to roll back the update? I'd like to buy the game while it's on sale.

I don't know why your answer is hightlighted as a solution because it isn't.

Me neither. It is not a solution to getting the game run on Windows 11 24H2, but I guess it is the solution to the question "Why isn't this game running.".

Not sure if MS is ever going to revert the changes that caused this game, and apparently some other games cease to work. Apparently Kalypso wouldn't want to try to fix the game either, so many years after release, all the developers having gone etc. etc.

Just tried it myself again, still doesn't work. I've been meaning to test whether it runs ok in Linux (under WINE), unfortunately I had to reinstall one laptop where I had a suitable Linux running...

Not a real solution, but at least it is possible to get the game to run on Linux...

https://www.gog.com/forum/general/getting_demonicon_to_run_in_linux/post10

So, until someone figures out the way to get it to run on Windows 11 24H2, at least there is some way to keep playing the game, in addition to keeping some old Windows 10 PC alive even after Microsoft stops releasing security updates for it later this year...
I've developed a partial fix for the game.

The problem was Windows 11 24H2 not supporting the game in fullscreen.
