i have freelancer, German version, and although i speak it quite fluently, i find it harder to play then say the same game in English. Should i stick with the german version, go with the english version, or get this game instead.

theyre two completely different kinds of games. freespace is a mission-based space sim in the vein of wing commander... darkstar one is closer to a game like freelancer/privateer... more like freelancer, really, in that the game is a whole lot less open-ended than privateer...
i know, that why i asked which is better FREELANCER or darkstar one.
Freelancer is a little more restrictive until you complete the game, or start in multilayer, but feels like it has a little more polish than Darkstar One (despite it's age).
Whereas Darkstar One feels larger, with a bit more to do in the world. And is graphically better. Voice work is poorer, but nowhere near horrible.
The games are different enough to be able to play both and gain some space sim genre enjoyment.
Freelancer: The English version has the voice of George Takei. That alone makes it worth playing :)
(Of course though, go with the language you feel best with)

lol i so totally saw "freespace" and not "freelancer" when i read your post...
i can't saying anything about darkstar but freelancer is on of the better games i have played easy to control etc i installed it recently and i found a prob with the auido you can't here any audio at all at some points mainly during the main missions lol when you need to hear those things lol
I have to be honest: I *cannot* stand Freelancer's flight model. I don't understand all the praise heaped on the game. Combat is reasonably fun, sure, but everything else in the game is so simplistic and/or wonky, from the economy to the layouts of the solar systems, that it's impossible to swallow.
So I say DarkStar One is the better game, simply because it's more fun to fly. Its economy is just as simplistic as Freelancer's, but everything else is better in my opinion.
Freelancer would be in my top 10 games of all time!
The storyline was second to none, the real stroke of genius was the way it gave you time to do whatever you felt like between missions, exploration, assignments, mining the choice was yours. I found this game so utterly absorbing I was actually sad to finish it. Online play could have been so much better.
Darkstar one is more of a Freelancer wannabee that doesn't quite get it right, for example there is little else to do but go from one assignment to the next because each solar system is the same as the last, 1 trade station, a research station and a couple of asteroids, no secret wormholes, hidden stations, shipwrecks etc, because of this it feels confined, a strange sensation to feel whilst travelling through space. On a positive note ship customization is much better than freelancer.
Darkstar one is still worth a play at the budget price though!
