I'm getting the same thing with the black screen on startup. After fighting with my copy on Steam all day, I thought I'd dodge the issue by installing my GOG copy. No joy. It does the same thing and refuses to start. I suspect it has something to do with modern programs having trouble with old, in-game videos.

I guess I'll try some of the "fixes" and see if I can get teh GOG version to run. I'm using Windows 10, by the way.

Could it be the video codecs on the computer? I have KCP installed on my computer and rarely does the game crashes on start up for me on both Windows 8.1 and 10. I also used a fixed options.dopt file from PC Gaming Wiki that makes the game run in windowed mode instead of fullscreen.

I suppose it could be a video issue, seeing as how the game starts with videos (and doesn't even get to the main menu). I'm definitely trying to run the game in full-screen.

EDIT: The new Warmastered Edition seems to work fine in Windows 10, so whatever was wrong has been fixed. I already had KCP installed, so that may not have been the issue. I say "may not" because my version of KCP was old.
