I just recently got back into DD and decided to mess around with one of my save files that I have had since before the town event updates, but I seem to have run into a major problem. No matter how much progress I make, whenever I quit to the main menu or start the game up, it resets my progress to Day 16 (which is what it had been before I started replaying DD), with any changes I have made undone. The announcement for the last town event that happened in my most recent playthrough will pop up, but it will not actually be in effect. Similarly, anyone who died the last time around is brought back, the stagecoach has the same people, the loot I acquired is gone... you get the picture. Is anyone else having this problem?

Has that save file somehow been changed to read-only?

I don't recall doing anything that would have caused that, but maybe something happened in an update. I'll poke around in the save files and take a look later.

I checked the saves folders. It looked like some of them were designated 'read only', so I tried turning that off in the folders' properties. Doesn't seem to have fixed the problem, though.
Just for shits and giggles, I went and set the entire saves folder to both read only and not read only. I tried my other old save file. There was no town event at the start, which makes sense; there wouldn't have been any record of one being in place since the save predated town events. I finished an expedition into the weald, triggering a town event that made all stress relief less effective, and quit to the main menu. Everything had reset, but the town event was still in effect.
Looks like my new save has also developed the problem as a result of tinkering with the saves. I'm guessing that some, but not all, of the files in each save need to be set to read only in order for a save to work. Think I'll back up what I have, do a reinstall, then see how the new saves are configured.
I think I found out what the problem was; it turns out that all the save folders were supposed to be read only, but the files in each folder were not. Somehow, a number of files in my old saves had become read only. Since the folders themselves had to be read only, my initial approach of turning everything in the Darkest folder to have the same property didn't work. Thankfully, backing up the saves and starting a new set created a save file folder that was properly formatted, along with the accompanying files.
