Duke Nukem II is definitely the superior game (IMO), but Dangerous Dave is a lot of fun too. Especially Haunted Mansion (I'm not too familiar with any of the others TBH).

And in case you didn't know, 3D Realms (Apogee) is still selling all of their classic platformers (including Keen) at their webstore. The games come bundled with DOSBox, just like they would if they were sold here. You can also get the Keen series on Steam.

Bottom line, if you have the spare dough and you like the style of the classic id/Apogee platformers, Dangerous Dave is worth checking out. Don't forget to try the original as well, which you can find as a free download on John Romero's website.

We'll probably see more 3D Realms/Apogee stuff here when they are willing to lower their prices and bundle stuff. Duke Nukem 1 & 2 would probably be purchased more if they were bundled together, as would Commander Keen. Shadow Warrior would probably show up, too, if it cost 6 bucks instead of 10.

I'm surprised Wolfenstien 3D isn't here, though. Price is right and legacy is tremendous. :-/

the wolfenstien issue is that the game is too voilent for Gog's peaceful standards.


also: I bought the dangerous dave pack, and it is great! i loved it more then i thought I would, the reloading gun stuff is probably the best part, it really sets the game apart from other apogee stuff. haunted mansion is the only one i've played so far, but the other too look good. i'm sorry they decided to give you unlimited ammo in the third one. bad move in my opinion.

Fascinating! I've been to 3D Realms recently for the freebies like Pharaoh's Tomb, but wasn't aware they were selling downloads of Commander Keen etc! The prospect of playing Crystal Caves and such again warms my heart. I'll have to go back and purchase there after I play the stack of GOG's I've got lined up already (like Dangerous Dave). But I hope by that time all the games will be available here instead. I wonder why they aren't already; best cases, maybe they are trying to track down old content to bundle like Keen Dreams & Keen ep. 6, or maybe waiting to make it a big anniversary event or some such. Giant kudos to 3D Realms for making it available, but GOG are great curators and I have a hunch your dollars will get you a little more content for your money here than there.

A cool thing about the version of Dangerous Dave & Haunted Mansion is that it works decently in Dosbox for Android as well! I tried to get the version I found on the internet to work but I never succeeded in mapping the shooting button. Which made the game useless.. But in this version it actually works! (playing on an Nvidia Shield and/or tablet with ps3 controller)

Another action-platformer in the lines of Dangerous Daven and Duke Nukem is Bio Menace, which I believe is made freeware by 3DRealms. Monster Bash is also still pretty cool.

Only the mac version though. Not the PC 1990 one.
