I have all my gog games on a external drive because there's no drm, and I see that the devs recommend a ssd.

Using an external drive will most likely negatively impact the game performance due to the speed limitation on the USB link. The SSD requirement indicates that there will be a lot of data access happening, and the quicker your system can access the data, the better for the the overall game performance in the end.

I think that depends on your external drive. An external ssd, connected via thunderbolt / fast usb-c should be good enough. But an external HDD contected via USB 3.0 might lead to a low framerate and take a loooong time to load.

I'll probably look into a external ssd, I have a internal ssd so I'll be fine.
