So I have to set the resolution to 1920x1080 every time I run the game. I set the resolution in the graphics options, hit back, and it saves the resolution, and it shows in the correct resolution when I play. If I exit the game, it reverts back to the default 1024x768.

Anyway to fix this?

I have the same problem. Resolution stays 1024x768.
same problem here
Just to say I have the same problem, I've just taken to setting it back to the correct res each time I launch the game. Does anyone know where it saves this info? Is it in a file or the registry?
same problem. its annoying :(
Same issue. My guess is the reason are settings are stored in the registration database under local machine. That means the game must run with administrator rights to change them. This could be the issue and easily something GOG.com could change to use a file instead.
Yes, the resolution setting does not save. Quick way to change it is to just load your game, hit the menu button and there is already standalone button to change resolution with all the possible resolutions in one window so no scrolling. Well at least for me, mine top is 1440x900. The change is instant.

What's bugging me more is that the music volume cannot be changed at all. Just sound volume can. Could anyone confirm that it's not just me. Probably just modifying the ogg files will solve that...
it's in the registry, at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Funatics\Cultures

the strange part is, if you set say 1600x900x16 ingame it works, and when you exit to desktop the reg looks like it took the settings, but when you start the game it just resets to 1024 again.
Hmm … 2019 and the problem still exists.
The game DOES save the resolution as long as you pick an 8-bit one e.g. 1920x1080...8. For some unknown reason, if you choose any of the available 16 bit resolutions, it will reset to 1024x768...8 on your next play. So just go for your resolution of choice in 8-bit colour (this won't really affect the colour scheme). Hope this helps.
Almost 10 years and we still have to handle with this issue.
GOG can you finally do something with that?!
almost March 2023 - I've tried every resolution from 800x600 to 1366x768 and every time the game forces to open in 800x600, I guess...
Here's what I did to open Cultures in fullscreen on a 1366x768 resolution screen and I have the ability to change the resolution while playing (sticking to 8bit options as suggested above) with actual enlargement of the onscreen presented world (GUI/menu is shrinking with growing res).

The most helpful thing was to set Intel graphics control panel/ display/ scaling options: to "scale fullscreen" (or fullscreen scaling?) instead of Maintain aspect ratio (default for 1366x768) or maybe you'll have Maintain Display Scaling (default for 1920x1080).

I also changed the compatibility settings of cultures.exe to win XP, and I marked the checkboxes below: 8bit color mode and run as administrator*.

* If you have some changes in high DPI settings: when I enabled "Program DPI setting", I couldn't run the game. as for high DPI scaling override, this option was gray in my settings: enabled and set to application.
