Using the Keyboard and mouse, Is there a way to attack with melee that doesn't involve putting the cursor near the character? I've searched in the options, but didn't find an option to change it. A lot of times when I think I'm going to do a melee attack, instead I ended doing the ranged attack.

I got this one and it's safe to say it's optimized for a controller. Just think of an Action RPG from the SNES era and you will agree that quick reaction dodges and combos are more fluid with a controller. I have a xbox 360 controller for PC and it's awesome!. Make sure you try that option as well and don't miss the opportunity of playing this gem in progress :)
