Hello everyone!

The classic version has native support to run on Glide through nGlide, according to: https://www.zeus-software.com/downloads/nglide/compatibility

The GOG version is messed up. The game was supposed to start with this renderer, but instead the game starts in software mode, which is bad and ugly as hell. I deleted DDrawCompat, I also deleted a "config.ini" file, before, I tried to modify the information, in short, without results. It seems like GOG did some kind of black magic and the game only runs on software, which sucks.

Does anyone know how to make our friend Croc run in all its glory in Glide? Our cute little crocodile is to run in Glide, not in D3D or software.

I thank the warrior who manages to undo this witchcraft!

There is a "Definitive Edition" fan patch for the original game you can find here on PCGamingwiki

https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Croc:_Legend_of_the_Gobbos

Also I'm not sure what version the game is. 3DFX or Diret X. If it's the former, there is a also a fan patch to turn it into the Direct X version.

It does seem that the Classic version on GOG is presently software-only.

As an alternative, you could play the remaster and select classic graphics.

I am aware of this patch. Looking closer it uses OpenGL, according to the changelog:

"A graphics card supporting the OpenGL 3.2 Core Specification
and a processor that supports SSE2. Any video card since 2010 and
any processor that supports Windows 8 is likely to work.
Windows 10. May work on lower versions, but this has not been tested.
Ubuntu Bionic Beaver 18.04 LTS or greater."

Unfortunately, my PC only supports OpenGL 3.0.
Anyway, thanks for pointing it out! :)

Man, that would be the obvious way to go, unfortunately, my PC is a potato, and running the remastered version is out of the question. And yes, as I said in my first post, the guys at GOG made the mistake of locking the game in Software mode, completely killing Glide support.

I think Argonaut was responsible for the classic version on GOG.

Extracting the aforementioned "Definitive Edition" over the top of the classic version works. You then need to run it using Croc64.exe, rather than croc.exe. This still doesn't give you nGlide but it does have hardware rendering effects.

EDIT: if you want to run in windowed mode, the configuration file is stored under %appdata%\Croc\config.ini
Open it in Notepad and find the Fullscreen=1 line and change it to Fullscreen=0

I haven't had any luck getting Croc from original 90s installation media to run on modern Windows.

Mate, thanks for the info, but unfortunately it didn't work. As I said in my other post, the "Definitive Edition" patch only uses OpenGL 3.2, and my integrated GPU supports OpenGL 3.0. So launching the 64-bit binary gives me a "window cannot be created" error. Launching the classic binary gives me an AppCrash error.

Retail version can't be installed on modern systems, I think, because it uses a 16-bit installer.

I can support the software mode of the classic version if there is no support for D3D or Glide. What doesn't make sense to me was the cutting of these hardware renderers. I hope there is a good reason for this, otherwise I will see it as a retarded attitude from the guys at Argonaut Software.
You can use an OpenGL wrapper.

The one from here should work
Download the 64-bit version and then extract opengl32.dll to the same folder as Croc64.exe

My man, you saved my ass! This worked like a charm... Now I feel like I'm in a summer dream. Thank you so much! =D
Sadly these solutions didn't work out for me. It's disappointing how the Classic Edition by opting to use the Software-Mode it looks visually worse than the CD-ROM release with the nGlide patch.

I was trying to see if I could make the nGlide shader work in Croc Classic but results are negative this far.

If you want to use nGlide, you will need the original Croc from CD, not the GOG version.

You can friend me if you want to chat more about it.

That's what I'm actually doing for now as the current state of Classic Croc, as of 1.11.13, because it's not a truly CD-ROM replacement.

Yet in my opinion there's more things they should check besides the Hardware Acceleration + nGlide mode.
