It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).

After struggling to get Creatures 1 up and running on Windows 10, I finally figured out how to get everything working. So I'm writing this guide to help anyone else who's in the same boat! If you have other tips/tricks, please let me know. :)

Sorry I can't include links properly! The forum won't let me do so at the moment.

INSTALLING

1. Use the GOG installer, and install to the default directory: C:\GOG Games\Creatures 1

2. If using a hi-dpi screen, you'll want to change the compatibility settings so the interface and world aren't drawn super tiny. Find C:\GOG Games\Creatures 1\Launcher.exe, right click and open Properties, go to the Compatibility tab, and change "Override high DPI scaling behavior" to "System (Enhanced)." If this is greyed out, click the "Change settings for all users" button and allow the app to make changes.

3. Install the Remastered Patch: download, unzip, and double-click the exe file to run the installer. Available here: www.webpetz.com/creatures/remasters.php

4. Update the Object Injector: download the file and double-click to run the installer. Available here: creatures.treesprite.com/Upgrades.html (direct link: creatures.treesprite.com/Upgrades/C1/Injector.exe)

5. Installing COBs: While your World.sfc and a bunch of other things are stored in ~\My Documents\Creatures\Creatures 1, I've played it safe and installed all .spr, .wav, .cob, and .rcb files in their appropriate folders in C:\GOG Games\Creatures 1. The Injector looks there by default anyway.

I believe the Observation Kit and Update 1.02 have already been included in GOG's version, so you should be good to go at this point!

UNINSTALLING

If your install is crashing or otherwise having problems, it helps to remove ALL related files and registry keys before reinstalling.

1. Run the GOG uninstaller and allow it to delete all files: C:\GOG Games\Creatures 1\unins000.exe

2. Remove related registry keys: open regedit.exe, search keys containing "creatures," and delete the ones similar to the ones below. Be SUPER careful here, you don't want to delete any system files by accident!
...\VirtualStore\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Gameware Development
...\VirtualStore\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Millennium Interactive

3. Delete VirtualStore files: under ~\AppData\Local\VirtualStore, look for any Creatures folders or .COB files. Delete those.

And I think that should pretty well clean out everything that got installed.
