I have been trying for two years to get this game working with sound on varying versions of Ubuntu, to no avail. The game runs in windowed mode but with no sound. If you launch from a console window, you'll see some warnings about not finding Steam and several instances of "ERROR: pthread_mutex_trylock() failed", but nothing related to sound or the SDL library. If you search for it, you'll find several threads on Steam with people complaining about the same problem in 2014.

Some of them have been able to solve the problem by copying over the SDL library files from Broken Age (another Double Fine game), setting some environment variables and paths, and so on.

Unfortunately, I tried all combinations of those solutions and none of them seem to work. I'm not sure if it is an incompatibility with modern Linux systems (after all, the game is old and the thread posts are from 2014) or the GoG version is somehow different from the Steam version.

I tried contacting GoG Support, which relayed me to Double Fine support. Double Fine staff says there is no separate patch for this game, and that I need to try the Steam version of the game. However, I'm not going to create a Steam account just to try and troubleshoot this game.
