I bought Cossacks Anthology just the other day and it's awesome except for some issues.

1. It crashed, once, however I don't know the cause. I was playing vs 3 Hard computers on a Large (2x) map. Maybe that's the reason but to be honest I don't know. If someone can offer insight, I'd appreciate it.

2. It seems not to be happening anymore, but at first Cossacks didn't remember my options (resolution, no music, game speed). The other times I played it worked as expected. I'll see if it stays this way in the future.

However the real pain right now is this: I play with the option "Capture Artillery only", but if I do the following: start a game, play then save. Come back later and load the game, then the capture options go to default (capture everything).

I think the rest is ok. I'll edit this post in case something new comes up.

Anyone has encountered these problems before? I saw the thread about not remembering options but there was no solution in it.
The only thing I encountered was that the options for sound volume, music volume, and game speed setting (slow or fast) do not save. This seems to be an unresolved GOG Cossacks bug.

As for the capture options, I will test and let you know.

Thanks for the help, pisces72. Let me know, however I have news. Yesterday I loaded a game I had saved with the purpose of testing the capture bug... It didn't happen. I I'll try again today but it seems I only encounter bugs once and then they disappear. :D

Let me know anyways if you have positive or negative results, maybe this might help someone else, IF it doesn't happen anymore to me.

I played a 1v1 yesterday vs a Normal computer, if I remember correctly, in order to reduce the strain on the CPU and the game went well, no crashes, etc. I can't wait until I have a new computer so I can do some online fun! :D

Thanks again for the help.
Okay I did a quick test:

Random map, Capture Artillery Only.

Saved game, exited game completely, run the game again and loaded the save. I did not find any bugs, rules were still capture artillery only. Everything as expected.

To sum up, here is a list of confirmed bugs in Cossacks Games:
(1) Music volume does not save.
(2) Gamespeed type (fast/slow) does not save and always reverts to fast. To fix, you need to manually switch it back to slow (if you use slow mode like me) every time you load a new save, or start a new game. I usually hit the f12 key while the level is still loading so the game pauses immediately before anyone moves a muscle :) and switch it back to slow. You can also use CTRL+D to switch speed modes.
(3) The speed slider works normally in singleplayer, but has no effect in multiplayer and you have to control the game speed by manipulating the CPU speed directly.
(4) Some unit animations are wrong as explained in my Ultimate Pack thread.

I hope this clears things up. I have played the game for a long time and this is a sum of my experience.
Cool. I played another map today (vs 1 hard) and no problems. Later today I'll try the saving-capture artillery only thing, but I am confident it's not going to happen.

About your list of confirmed bugs:

1- Music volume is saving now. As in, it only did it again once and now it acts as it should (no music).
2 and 3- Gamespeed works too. AS far as online is concerned I don't know because I haven't played online yet.
4- I have noticed some thing odd, like a battleship flickering because it was positioned in a group of other battleships, maybe it was in an odd position. Simply issuing a move command restored the normal texturing.

In conclusion, right now Cossacks seems to be behaving properly on my computer and I'm glad it does! I only disabled Desktop composition and disable themes in the compatibility tab. Also run as Admin. The rest is default.

Thanks again for the help and perspective pisces72! :) We could play some games in the future if you want, when I'm available. :D

Well, the game behaves really differently on a lot of different systems so it's hard to tell. My music SLIDER does not remember it's position and game speed setting doesn't (but slider does :-/).

I'm happy that the gameplay itself works flawlessly.

Maybe I'll see you on GameRanger ;-)

I have, like most upgraded to Windows 10. I redownloaded Cossacks back to war. Starting up the game and windows indicates it doesn't like the resolution (the default), but asks if I want to continue anyway. I continue but now the options wont allow me to change the resolution at all. Even with DCMR start the same thing.

try changing the screen resolution to 1024x768 using display settings - you may be able to start the game but then probably you will end up with a frozen mouse :-(

I've had the same problem and found this solution:
* Delete/Rename file mode.dat in the Back to War folder (will reset to default settings)
* Set the compatibility settings for cossacks.exe for all users:
- click on the change settings for all users button
- enable 8-Bit colors (will prevent the nasty resolution popup)
- enable to execute as administrator (will prevent the authorisation prompt)
* You have to readjust your options after this.

Now I can start the game from the GOG launcher without any prompts and have the resolution listing available in the options.

P.S.
To start the game directly from dmcr.exe (without intro videos) it's sufficient to enable 8-Bit colors for dmcr.exe.
