My game keeps freezing whenever it needs to load something for fast travel or riding an elevator. The game just stops, and when in task manager I have to use keyboard shortcuts to end the process because the mouse is being locked in the middle of the screen.

Does anyone else use two monitors and borderless fullscreen? I'm wondering if that is the cause.

Update: Accompanying the freeze there is a Visual C++ error or something but I can't even view it because the window keeps refocusing on the frozen Control executable. I can only try and fail to get a printsc screenshot during the one frame the error remains on screen.

Update 2: It even freezes sometimes when trying to use a Control point, meaning that save data reverts to the previous checkpoint. This freezing constantly loses you significant game progress that you need to do all over again.

I have the exact same issue, but only one monitor and normal full screen mode. The strange thing is that I had no issues during the first few hours of the game, but now see rather frequent crashes. When trying to ride an elevator, the game stalls exactly as you have described.
I've heard suspicion that it may be related to GPU overheating but I haven't been able to confirm anything. My temperatures are just fine. The only evidence to support that has been that when I start playing there are no crashes and the longer I do play the more often they happen. But still, anything like that would have to be caused by the game, not my setup because I literally cleaned my PC case and everything in it two weeks ago.

I'm not sure there's an issue with multiple displays, fullscreen mode or alt-tabbing, but the crashes are so frequent that it's not really possible to connect any phenomenon into them to make any determinations regarding cause.

Update: After looking at MSI Afterburner stats, I've noted that the average GPU usage is 99% at all times when playing the game, which runs at 80-90fps. Temperature hangs at a steady 82°C, which is high but not something that would stall it. Other games deal with that just fine. The real concern I think is that the game doesn't limit its performance (there is no FPS cap) and thus the GPU is always at maximum stress, leading to hitches in framerate and obviously a lot more heat generation. Lowering the graphics settings has no effect. I still don't have any evidence to support the assertion that freezes and crashes are caused by overheating, especially since this is the only game that does that.

Write a support ticket:

A little late, but if you suspect the problem is because of your GPU being overworked, and it averages 80-90 fps, enabling VSync will set it to your monitor's refresh rate. If you have a 120 or 144 hz monitor, set your refresh rate on it to 60 before playing CONTROL.

Other than that, the Visual C++ error tends to happen with GOG games when the redistributables get messed up some how. I would run a verification and double check to see if you can manually install the redists from the options tab in Galaxy.

Hopefully this helps! Sorry it's a month late!
