same boat. I requested a refund unless and until this is made compatible for windows 8. It seems a real shame to only release this on an unsupported and 'obsolete' operating system. if it works on win10 that'll be nice, but in the meantime, it really needs to work on the OS of the day.
So, I' in the same boat as everyone here. My wonderful fiance decided to surprise me with some game from my wishlist during the summer sale. What she didn't know is that some of the game were wishlisted for technical reasons. I have already had to tell her I already had one of the games (somehow my wishlist didn't remove it a few weeks ago when I bought it.) I would rather find some work around than tell her a second game is technically unplayable. At this point I a down to 1/3 of the games she purchased working/being one I didn't have if I can't get this to work.

I have tried compatibility mode. i read some of the other fixes and they either seem technical or i am not sure i can do them on a netbook.
It sort of worries me that games get left behind when newer OS's come out for it. I mean if this could be fixed up to work on Windows 7, what's stopping the developers to patch it to like Windows 8.1 or even the upcoming Windows 10.

Makes me hope and anticipate for something like Dosbox but with like Windows 95/98/XP support TBH.
I was able to get Conquest: Frontier Wars working on Windows 8.1 64bit with an nVidia 780 by using a DirectDraw/Direct3D emulator. I believe this should work on most systems. You can download it from the link below.

Tried with DXGL (780ti)

Game at least runs, but does not detect accelerated gfx.

(And missing textures/objects running in software mode)

Btw - working 100% with the VMware method - bit cumbersome tho !!
