I also have a "Direct X5 not found" error but my workaround in pretty fun : in the folder fo the game, there are 2 files, one called "comandos" (with a typo) and another called "commandos", all I have to do is to double-click the file WITHOUT the typo to launch the game (and yes both are mandatory otherwise the game won't start)...

While it's not really a big problem, it would be nice if GOG could fix this :-)

I tried this but it launches then closes. Not sure what else to do.

Well in my commandos directory there is an exe called: comandos_w10.exe
So I'm guessing this is the version patched for windows 10, because this exe works. (On windows 10 obviously).

I was able to get it to launch but weird thing. the Mouse only moves to the left and upwards. When trying to move to the right or downwards, it does not work, making the game unplayable.

I've given up.
i just edited comandos to commandos and its works fine. only issue i found its that mouse cursor move really slow. but i gues it is fine since game start working again

Surprisingly, this worked for me as well.

Nvm.

Fixed with above.

Just to confirm editing the "comandos.exe" to "commandos.exe" does in fact solve the directX 5 initialization error.

Not sure why this occurs as no coding has taken place, suspect a config file refers to 2 seperate ".exe" files

However I can report no mouse issues with my install.

Because Windows 10's internal compatibility system is assigned to a misspelled executable.

Jwrath: Ok it works by renaming Comandos.exe to Commandos.exe, but where are the videos? There's no intro video or any other cutscene. How can I fix that?
avatar
astaim: I know this is really old and you proably won't see it, but I fixed it and I want to leave it here in case someone else has this issue.
If your videos are not showing and you have K-lite codec pack (or any other that uses LAV Video codecs) go to the LAV Video properties, and on the "Formats" tab, disable the cinepak codec (that's the one this game uses).
Hope this helps someone.
Just want to thank you for your tip.
I was also having the problem of not getting the videos and - thanks to your advice - I can now see all the videos.
Thanks!

Just change the .exe name from "comandos.exe" to "commandos.exe" this should fix the problem.

And as for the people having problems with stuttering / lagging mouse movement, if you could, reduce the polling rate of your mouse to 125hz (remember that this game is from 1998 hehe), if it doesn't fix it, then try to play with the DPI of the mouse (try 125hz 800dpi). this will help alot with the game becoming smoother.. and it worked for mine.

In order to have a smoother cursor experience you can follow this post here and install the ddraw.dll mentioned in this post:
modelrail.otenko.com/electronics/commandos-behind-enemy-lines-resolution-fix#comment-40744

Also apply the patch mentioned on that website for a better resolution.
I have just bought and installed the game and also had to rename the executable + adjust the settings so it runs in Galaxy.
It is quite embarrassing that GOG sells a game that actually doesn't run out of the box, moreover when the fix has been known for years...
