When I start BtCoD, it shows the Commando logo and then only a black screen. I can alt-tab to the desktop and close the program, but no setting like "compatibility" will help.
I run Vista 32 bit.
Behind Enemy Lines worked fine.
Any ideas?

Bumping this because I have the exact same problem. I don't have much hope for a solution though, seeing as the OP is almost two years old with no replies.
I haven't had this problem myself and I run Vista 32bit but it sounds like you could be missing some necessary codecs.

Try download the K-Lite Codec Pack
http://www.free-codecs.com/k_lite_codec_pack_download.htm
and installing it.

Then goto Start -> All Programs -> K-Lite Codec Pack -> Configuration -> FFDShow video decoder.
Then scroll down to the Format "Cinepak" and change "libavcodec" to "disabled"

As I said the game worked fine for me so I don't know if this will help but I have found that it's helped with other games. I hope it helps.

Thanks for replying! I installed the K-Lite codec pack. The setting for Cinepak was already set to "disabled" by default. Unfortunately, that didn't fix the problem. I still only get the Commandos logo and a black screen after that (no error message).

I got the same problem when I tried to play the game after reinstalling the operating system(mine is Windows 7 64) without reinstall the game, but if you reinstall the game, all those problem will be gone.

I solved problem by:

1. open installed game under program filesx64/GOG... etc and find "coman_mp"
2. right click and choose "Properties"
3. choose "compatibility"
4. select "Disable fullscreen optimalization" and confirm by OK
5. Start the game

That did the trick for me. Thanks!!

BTW I'm on Windows 11 Home Edition
got other issue. Game works, but I cannot save game. It's not like as i see i many other videos that save option is locked. For me it's unlocked, I can choose save name, but after that, when i click on load, there's no save to choose. Also quick save shows me saving screen, but quickload does nothing. Any idea how to fix this? I got windows 11, tried changing comando.cfg, it didn't helped
