How do I disable the stuttering in the Commander Keen games? Specifically, episodes 4 (Goodbye Galaxy) and later.

I tried turning on the in game option to reduce stuttering. It didn't work.

I tried editing the dosboxKeen.conf file and set fulldouble=true (because the info in that file said it would reduce stuttering. It didn't work.

I changed the output=overlay to the other options (like ddraw), but it didn't remove the stuttering.

I tried downloading another dosboxKeen.conf file that someone else posted. He said it would reduce stuttering because he set the cycles to 10000. However, it didn't work. The conf file was completely empty.

So, reinstalled and manually changed the cycles in the conf file from auto to 10000. It didn't work.

It looks like stuttering might be due to screen tearing. Either the game isn't updating fast enough or it's updating too fast. I tried forcing dosbox to use Vsync in my Nvidia control panel, but it had no effect.

Has anyone gotten it to play smoothly?

Your best bet is to use Commander Genius, as these games due to the frame rate they ran at, can have a perceptible stutter to some people especially if you are used to higher framerates.

I tried it out.

The site made it seem like the latest version only works on Win 10 or later, but it worked on Win 7.

I had to turn the volume up in the settings in order to hear anything, but that works now.

I set the aspect ratio to 16x10 to get things to look correct and turned off intscaling in order to fill the whole screen.

Installing the high resolution texture pack helped get rid of the flickering caused by the previous checkerboarding that the high res texture pack replaces with solid colors.

It works well now.
