Every time the game kicks me out when a representative of a foreign nation wants to have an audience with me. The first dialog box comes out and the program automatically shuts down and I go back to my operating system.
It's very difficult to play like that, I can only get to the middle of the game.
Does anyone know how I could fix it?

Are you by any chance playing the game in Spanish or any other non-English language? Colonization was not exactly programmed with localization in mind and there are known bugs with texts containing accented characters. These thread sounds a lot like your situation (although it was allegedly fixed): https://www.gog.com/forum/colonization_sid_meiers/game_crashes_in_1665_when_contact_another_country

Another issue with non-English versions is some Natives being absent from the real world America map.
