Hello,

I just got my first CC game, the Russian Front one. I plan to play the campaign on full realism, but I'm not that experienced with wargames (or strategy games in general) so I'll probably handicap the opponent a bit.

What I don't know yet, and I'd like some input from experienced players, is should I include some additional battle end conditions or just leave the defaults? Basically, do you think should I add timeout or victory locations to my end conditions?

Timeout may be a nice setting for some battles, but it is a bit unpredictable. It may just as well annoy you because things may finally be going your way at 30 minutes or something.

When you have all victory locations, the enemy is usually defeated already, so it should not matter much.

I had a look at the other difficulty settings, and frankly I think they just remove nice features that make Close Combat 3 unique.

If you want to make it easier on yourself, you can easily do so by "save-cheating" a little with the first few battles: Like only advance to the next battle when casualties are low and all armor remains at least repairable. In the other case, when things go bad; press 'ESC' and start the last autosave to try again. Try to buy armor that can be upgraded. This way you get a good force which will make all thing easier later on. The game gets difficult when you continue even with heavy losses and will have to enter the next battle with a force to weak for the task.

Thanks for the tips!

One question, thought: how do I know which armour is upgradeable?
I just found this:
Close Combat 3: The Russian Front - Upgrade paths for all CC3 units.

Cool, thanks!

Will start a 100% realism, no handicap game today.
Normal difficulty, 100% realism, standard end conditions and going fine. I'm playing Russians and I got to the point where I'm slowing the German advance to Stalingrad.

Game is fun, and I only made a few cheat-quits when I messed up royally. I'm glad I didn't set a time limit. Most battles end before we kill each other, anyway. Either one side flees or we agree to truce.
Nice to hear that the campaign is fun this way. Lacking time, I tend to play operations instead of campaigns, but it should not be all that different. So, good luck with the war!
Timeouts are useful in the more recent entries in the series, given the size of the maps it saves you from endlessly waiting around for the AI to make a move. This is also useful if the game doesn't allow you to either retreat or flee - something you can do in CC3.

All Victory locations can make for some desperate scraps. A five minute window gives the AI or you a chance to retake locations to reset the counter.
