I seem to be having trouble remapping the keyboard controls and am wondering what I'm doing wrong.

The default set-up only uses the Primary keyboard controls but not the Alternate ones. So I thought I'd remap the Primary controls so that I can use the WSAD keys to move as I'm finding it impossible to play with the default set up of the up/down keys. Anyway, I change the Primary controls to WSAD and click OK but when I get back to the game I'm unable to move at all when pressing the WASD keys. If I want to move, my only option is restore the default set up.

I know that my keyboard is working fine and I can't work out what I'm doing wrong. I've read the manual but that actually doesn't help. I have a feeling it is something simple but I just can't see it. If it's any help, the game is installed in C:\Gog Games and it has admin rights.

Can anyone help? Thanks.

Try restarting your PC.

triock: Try restarting your PC.
Unfortunately already tried that - no luck :(

The vanilla installation is supposed to use both controls, primary and alternate. I can move with both WASD and arrow keys. So the problem isn't the mapping in the first place.
I can also remap the alternate WASD to primary. Have installed anything on top of the GOG's version?

All control settings are saved in:
C:\Gog Games\Clive Barker's Undying\System\User.ini

Set controls to default in the controls menu and check if it is saved in User.ini

Left=StrafeLeft
Up=MoveForward
Right=StrafeRight
Down=MoveBackward
..
A=StrafeLeft
..
D=StrafeRight
...
S=MoveBackward
..
W=MoveForward

I've reset the controls to default and checked the user.ini file which shows the same settings as you've posted. I've also checked the time stamp of the user.ini file which shows that it has been updated when I changed to the default settings so it seems to be accessing it OK. I still can't move though using the wasd keys.

I've not installed anything else on top of the game and I have also tried a clean reinstall with no joy.

Hmm, maybe it's a DirectInput issue. I'd reinstall DirectX9 with this redistributable package:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109
Afterwards run the DirectX web installer to check all the newest components:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35

Still no go :( Both downloads said I'd got the newer versions and didn't need to update and so would not install. I'm beginning to think that I'm not destined to play this game...

BTW, thanks for your help thus far :)

You're welcome, I'm sorry we couldn't solve this yet.
Which Windows version are you using? Have you already tried running the game in compatibility mode, e.g. for Win XP (right-click the game's shortcut, select Properties and go to the Compatibility tab; Set the mode and tick the option to run the program as an administrator).

Thank you for trying though :)

I'm running Win7-64 bit and have tried changing the compatibility with no luck. It is already running with administrator rights.

Another long shot. There's a file named System.ini in \Clive Barker's Undying\System\
Open it and set UseDirectInput to true. Maybe that affects keyboard input as well.

[WinDrv.WindowsClient]
...
UseDirectInput=True

Also send a support ticket, maybe they've got another idea. But I doubt they'll have time to look into this until after the current sale.

Thank you so much - that works! I can now move around using the wasd keys. I'm off now to immerse myself in the story. Once again, thank you :)
