How do you avoid the werewolf's pounce attack?
NO matter what I do, they always jump at me and get a hit even when they swing their arm some feet away.
It makes the game really frustrating for me and I just want to quit playing. Any help? thanks.
I always keep moving around while I'm shooting them. When they prepare to jump you have to move on the side (if possible), not backwards. I don't know why they can hit you although they are some feat away. I don't have that problem
Dear lord enemies are SO FUCKING ANNOYING. Great game otherwise, but it's like the developers had a brainstorming session and thought: "So, what can we do to annoy the hell out of our player?" Ugh
Fenixp: at the time it weren't annoying, it was really hard playing nomal or hard to stay alive, but today... yes they are a little bit annoying XD.
We must to focuse only on the story, the atmosphere and the diary. Today enemies have an hell of A.I., at the time... decisely not!
First time going through the game, loved it up until I got out of the Manor, then the charm started to lose its grip on me.

By the time you get to the catacombs, I kid you not, the game will literally spawn an assembly line of those fuckers at you. It's not even fun at that point.

Great game held back by tedious and repetitive combat. There has seldom been a good "sewer level" in a videogame, and the catacombs was for me, the sewer level of Undying and when I just stopped playing. I might pick up an LP of this on YouTube someday. Kind of a shame, really.

Yeah I just facepalmed at the clown car this game tends to do. At one point I would have sworn that enemies are just respawning infinitely, but after about 5 minutes of standing in place and killing them they've stopped coming - and my objective was right behind their spawning point! And don't even get me started on enemies spawning BEHIND you.

Well actually Unreal, Blood, Duke 3D, all those games have challenging, satisfying and fun combat even today. It's not about age, it's just the enemies are fairly poorly design. But I can see how novelty of the approach to survival horror could be pretty damn cool in its age.

I have to agree with Fenixp...this game is way overrated. Blood destroys this in terms of gameplay, sound, and atmosphere. From what I've played the level design doesn't seem all that good either in comparison. Furthermore, the guy takes his sweet time when reloading the gun...uugh. Atmosphere and story can't save this game for me.

Compared to other games the reloadigtime of a revolver is more realistic. ;)

I wouldn't go as far as that. Level design ... Well, blood was a horror parody, they did have quite a bit more to work with - for what it is, Undying's level design is pretty cool, still sufficiently open and maze-like, but linear enough to allow for some neat story bits. And the game just looks gorgeous, yeah, yeah, dated engine and all that, but what they did with what they've had is utterly amazing, I especially like behavior of cloth like curtains and that kind of stuff, that's just amazing.

And weapons are ... Some are run-of-the-mill, some are pretty darn cool. Revolver sucks, it sounds like a pea shooter, it acts like a pea shooter, but I love mr. Shotty, and spells are pretty damn well executed as well - they tend to have interesting side-effects, they're quite fun to use

Oh and sound assets are amazing, I mean come on!

It's just ... That this FPS kinda sucks at being an FPS.

Yup, there's tons of stuff they did with Unreal Engine 1 that must've been jaw dropping back then, and still makes me pause today (I love the little details). The bloody footsteps created when you walk into pools of blood; the faux-curtain physics; lots of nice turn of the century portraits on walls (and of course, the gimmick of seeing their hellish side); a few decent scripted scares (I actually wanted more and expected a haunted house); powers and weapons that are interesting in concept but a pain to use.

For example, Tibetan War Canon? The dragon thing that breathes ice and occasionally makes you jump by sneezing? You would *think* that the thing does splash damage, but it really doesn't. You need direct hits for that thing. It's awful. And the journal is a neat idea, but again, its messy and is mixed up with new powers you gain. It's kind of a tease, really; the game is built on Unreal Engine and even has "huh, huh, huh!" jumping sounds, but its not a DM focused shooter. It's more of a survival horror. The game throws so many enemies at you, its often better to just run. Painkiller did the whole Gothic horror shooter better.
Just move around and have some patience. You are going to receive a resurrection spell which allows you to build your own temporary army of howlers (that's how they are called).

And later you will gain a Scythe and a solid portion of both fun & blood with it...

Yeah, now I got to the other extreme - I lunge about 40 medpacks on me at all times and I'm basically invulnerable. I would still not call that very good design, but at the very least it's more fun.
I remember I gave up shortly after reaching the catacombs back in the day. However, during my current playthrough, I stuck with it, and right around the time you receive the scythe, I think the whole game gets better.

I'm especially enjoying wrecking pirates with my scythe and shield spell. The little leaping kobolds are a joke now. The catacombs are long and repetitive, and you have to fight the same two enemies over and over again, but the atmosphere really kicks in afterwards. At least the game provides plenty of health packs in every area.
I do recall howlers respawning in a few places of the catacomb levels. Tends to be best to just move on quickly in those instances.

As much as I love the game as a whole, the last section admittedly does have rather generic enemies. Can't say I've ever really liked that part.
They are a bit much in hordes but it's not like they're impossible to dodge when in small numbers. Just aim for the head and keep side stepping while maintaining distance.
