As Wine HQ bug 10877 states, CHessmaster 9000 still doesn't work with Wine. Has anyone getting it run correctly? On my computer, it runs but I can't play chess as the chess board is not visible. I recently changed my graphicscard from nVidia to ATI - so also completely different video drivers - but the result is still the same: chessboard invisible.

Just to confirm this experience; runs beautifully on two Ubuntu systems (an Atom + integrated on-board graphics, as well as a Core2 duo with high-ish end ATI card) under Wine - sound is perfect, GUI great, but ... can't see the chess board or pieces! I tried a variety of board options, including plain 2D B&W, but all I get is a black void where the action should be. Enough tinkering with options causes the game to lock up.

Frustrating, since all the supporting elements seem to run at 100%.

So I'll add a mournful voice looking for a solution...

FWIW: Wine 1.2.2, Ubuntu 10.10. WineHQ indicates that 1.3.2.8 works at "silver"; however I updated to the most recent beta (1.3.34) and it still didn't help (actually hurt a tiny bit - I can't even see the preview icons of the different chess sets now)

Just tried it with latest Wine 1.7.15 ... but this is even worse: it crashes at start with the message

"A fatal error occured loading the Mentor Opening Book.
The program will now terminate."

The terminal output is:
