Hey all,

I've been trying to get Chaos Overlords to launch under Windows 10, but to no avail. I have tried all compatibility options under the .EXE but no luck. Every time I launch the game it loads a process under Task Manager but that's as far it gets before having to manually end task.

I have tried the game under a couple different Windows 7 systems and they work as expected.

Has anyone had success running the game under the new OS?

Thanks in advance.

Not that this will help, but it didn't run under Win 8/8.1. I just upgraded yesterday and I came here specifically to see if the change to 10 made a difference.

I guess it doesn't.
I came back to GoG to check the statis of chaos overlords...still no help on this title...what a shame
Windows 10 no Luck...

Well it hardly works on Windows 7. No option to have it run in window albeit it would be too small then and i can't get the stupid taskbar hide away in the game.

The only thing would be to ask the devs. They were making Chaos Overlords 2 until some people showed up claiming to own the rights.

Hi guys, bad news for everyone - Chaos Overlords is 16bit runtime environment, which was given up with win 8...

This means it won't work, unless you run environment emulator or older windows.

There was rumour of a Chaos Overlords 2 being made by the guy who made the 1st one, however he ran into some issues with the licensing from ... I forget - whoever it was who published it originally.

When I last checked, the court case had been kinda dropped and the IP was floating around - I was considering buying the copyright in the US and EU and giving it to him, but it would've cost several thousand dollars :`(

You can check the facebook page for updates, but I think the project has gone dark...
(google search "facebook chaos overlords")

Idk why the game just releases under a different name, but the same game, you know...

Anyway - no point buying this game - it's so abandonware that it won't even abandonware.

What about a spiritual successor to this game?
I thought the whole purpose of buying a game on gog was so that it would work on our new systems?

They can't always get games running on new machines; that's just the way it is, unfortunately.
Still no word on a first game fix or the new development of the second game...checking in once every 6 months LOL
I bought this game on GOG, played it once, threw out my ancient computer that I had kept for it, and windows updated to 10 :(

I know this is pretty much necroposting. But I found a solution that at least works for me. First of all I disabled all the compatibility options set by default (Windows XP mode and admin mode) and then I disabled full-screen optimisations and now it runs pretty close to perfectly. Only problem is that my taskbar doesn't disappear when the game starts.

I am going to try this...hope it works

It worked for me! Only 2 problems: 1. As mentioned above, the taskbar doesn't disappear. 2. When something in the game is supposed to be highlighted, it appears totally whited out instead. Annoying, but not necessarily gamebreaking. I'm just glad I can still play this old classic at all!
I was not able to start the GOG version at all, but I found a version somewhere else that runs under Windows 10.

However, the GOG version works to start for some people here, but had the problem the graphics were white boxes.

A solution to make it much better:

1. In the Data folder, copy the files from inside the PX16 folder, into the PX08 folder, and overwrite those.
Yep, overwrite the PX08 folder with the contents of the PX16 folder.

2. Then delete the PX16 folder.

3. Then play the game for a bit. Somehow, it just switches over to good graphics after a while. One time one minute, another time ten minutes.
