I beat this very decent game a few days ago, and while I was playing I naturally had a few questions. Things like "Why is that cave's entrance blocked? Do I have to [ buy something || hit a switch somewhere || kill a enemy I can't see || just ignore it for now ] ?"
And while it is very good gameplay-wise, this game could be better at providing answers to questions like that. Which I had to find elsewhere, BTW. So without further ado here's a concise list of tips I wish I had seen in-game and hopefully it'll help those that haven't yet played the game. I'll try to leave it spoiler-free.
1 - Once you get access to the Familiar Forest you'll see behind the traveling salesman a cave you can't enter, but you're not told why or when it's going to open up for you. That area will open only after you get all the secret treasure the priest hints at. That's basically one hidden chest from every scene between the beginning of the game and the final bout with the main boss, plus the extra areas that open up in every dungeon after you get all the secret chests from the normal stages of the dungeon. These extra areas can only be played in practice mode.
2 - Chante tells you a bit about how magic works, but she doesn't tell you the whole thing. Basically, when you're casting a multi-gem spell, the first gem (the last one you picked) determines which element is the base for the spell and every gem added after that acts as a modifier, or if it is of the same color it'll raise it to a second, third or fourth tier spell. Yes, 4th tier, because as you progress through the game Chante eventually becomes capable of combining four gems at one spell. (Hint: Heal is a third tier spell I wished for all the time I could only cast 2nd tier spells)
When they are modifiers red gems increase the strength of the spell, blue adds a status effect (usually poison, AFAIK), green will release three spells instead of one and yellow... well, I don't know. Didn't notice any effect other than wasting the gem.
The effects can be different on specific cases, for example I tried three blue gems plus one green and I got regen on top of the immediate healing effect.
3 - Just reinforcing a point I mentioned above, gems that are the same color as the base gem do not act as modifiers. I wish I knew that before I spent so much time reordering gems so that I had a sequence of three blues augmented by a red gem.
4 - Hold the magic casting button for too long and the spell will not only cancel as Chante says but the gems will drop. This way you can reorder your gems, which you'll want to do many times through the game.
5 - Sometimes when you're fishing there are fishes that will simply ignore you. No, their AI isnt' broken. There are fishes that you simply can't get until you find a better rod.
6 - The survival dungeon is not infinite. It is comprised of 60 stages, bosses at every 10 floors. It also gets progressively harder so if you think it's too easy because you're breezing through the first 10 floors just keep going and you'll have a decent match soon enough.
I hope that this was useful for newcomers. Good luck with the game.
