That was a beautiful looking port. All the graphics were cleaned up to look better on a Mac screen: larger player shields and Pope crosses marked territories. The interface was rearranged to be more intuitive and mouse-friendly. Best of all, the music was updated to stereo. The DOS version does have its retro charm, but give me the classy Mac version any day.

Still so glad to be able to play this again. Our old Mac Performa was sold off a long time ago but I still have this game, box, manual, and all.

Would the mods be opposed to me posting portions of the MacPlay manual here? It has expanded sections on strategy hints and post-release developer thoughts.

I played that version. :) The community is mostly self-regulated except for spam or really terrible things and the such. However, you posting original portions of the Macplay manual would be fine with whatever GOG representative happened to stroll by, perhaps even stickied (well ... I suppose on the other hand there could be copyright issues? hmmm ... while I still think it wouldn't be a problem and the worst thing they would do would be that they delete the uploaded manual attachments from your post, indeed good to check first).

As an aside, the version on GOG has a couple of bugs in it, see the post Technical Issues with Castles 2.

P.S. I see you're a relatively new member, welcome to GOG (and the forums btw). Do you still have a Mac? There are several threads and GOGmixes devoted to getting GOG games working on OS X.

Thanks! I do not own a Mac, which is why I'm glad I found a DOS version.

I just emailed the staff about my question. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

To be honest, even with a Mac you'd have to use the DOS version (via DosBox for OS X) since classic applications will no longer work in OS X.

It may take awhile for GOG to get back to you. They can be slow.

Totally agree! I remember playing the Mac version of Castles as a kid. I remember being so excited to see my PC-owning friend's version of Castles II.... but then I realized that his Castles II looked worse than my Mac version of the original :)

I've always been tempted to pick up the GOG version of Castles, but my memories of the original Mac version are too strong! I can say: there are ways of emulating 68k Macs out there, but it can be kind of a daunting process if you've never done it before.

Check out this screenshot of the Mac version for anyone who is curious:

Yes! I remember playing that, it was awesome.

I was wondering why both versions on this website didn't look like how I remembered, but were similar enough that I knew they were the same game.
I was just thinking I remembered a slightly different look to the game. I tried searching but this was the only picture I could find that looked like what I remembered.

Still the same game here though.
