I am very interested in this game, but I have never used or purchased a controller. Which controller should I buy and how much should I expect to pay for it (US dollars please).

For $20-$25 you can have an XBox 360 pad (which is fine with this game, I think)
Otherwise, the XBox One Controller are better, but more expensive (starting $42)

If I may add: Any controller really. But if you are using older controllers which still use Direct Input, you may need a plugin called x360ce. :)

I just finished the game with a Saitek P990 Dual Analog (DXInput) using that plugin. The controller would not work any other way

Glad I helped you out this way! I recently got FF 13 and couldn't use x360ce with that sadly so I had to use vjoy and universal joystick remapper to switch the button layout around. Luckily not needed for this game. ^^
