Putting the file name in quotes AND running in Administrator got it to work for me.

Cheers everyone it was Jagged Alliance 2 all over again
I had same problem running on Windows XP. Simply putting quotes around the path fixed it for me as well.
Namur , thanks so much for sharing your fix!

My issue wasn't exactly quotations, I think I actually had a typo in my save path line. Once I put quotations around the path, I started to get the message from the game that the path didn't exist, which was an improvement over the game crashing with no clues at all. And the path very much *did* exist, so I suspect there was a minor typo in the path I overlooked - an extra space or something.

I'm running under Crossover Games (in Linux - it's a fancy smancy front end for Wine).

I made a new save directory called "BSSave"
/home/laura/.cxgames/BrokenSword/drive_c/BSSave

and the path in sword1.ini is now
savepath=C:\BSSave\

Saves and restores perfectly now. Thanks again!

You're welcome ;)
Thanks for this guys, it was much appreciated.

I had an issue changing the save path as it wouldn't let me save the file once I had altered the text, but I found out that this was a vista issue and had to save a new copy of the file in a seperate location, modify the save path in the new file and then drag and drop this file into the original folder to replace the old one (Hope that made sense).

I can now play the original version of the game again :D
high rated
Just in case anyone reads through all the fixes here and still can't get it working I just removed the savepath="Whateverpath" from the sword1.ini, thats what finally fixed it for me.

Tried all the previously mentioned ideas (quotes around path, changing the path folder, running as Administrator) but this is what fixed it for me. Thank you for posting it!
Okay I am having alot of trouble here I had the same issue, followed the advice and now it says it can't even find the path. First I need to ask if I can do line breaks in the ini file, this one long huge line is just making it a PAIN to edit.
Found this fix after playing for 8 hours without saving ... If removing the savepath works for everyone (no idea, probably needs investigation), could GOG please fix this in the download to save other people from having to replay half of the game? :) What is the course of action, does GOG read these threads or should I send an e-mail?
