i would give it 5 stars. this is a classic one my favorite JRPGs that was abandon for over 20 years. yes, i have the original PC CD for this game but getting it to run on modern PCs does take some workaround and i don't mind at all I'm use it but having a simple install and play is always welcome. is this Port perfect no but the fact GOG is going out of their way to preserve these classic games they deserve the 5-star reviews.
Breath of Fire IV deserves 5 stars, even if the PC version is not as good as the PS1 original. Imagine being a fan of the Breath of Fire series who hasn't seen a purchaseable digital version since 2016 with the 3DS Virtual Console versions of Breath of Fire I and II, and Breath of Fire IV remained locked behind the PS3/PS Vita store as a PSone Classic since 2011. This is the first time the game's been easily accessible and playable in 14 years. So let people be happy.
Would I rate this 5 stars? Probably not but that doesn't mean that the others are shills.
They just enjoy this game very much.

yeah I think its more people are excited that a Dreamlisted game got released, I see these 5/5 ratings more as a "good job GOG" rather than BOF4 being a 2025 GOTY contender. I think the original Metascore from 25 years ago (8.3/10 from pro reviewers, 84/100 userscore) is fairly accurate. Its a great PS1-style JRPG if you're into those.
I wouldn’t call them shill reviews per se. More like folks wearing rose-tinted blinders. The reviews here are seldom reliable because of it. You’ll see mediocre games here get 5 stars simply because they were released here, regardless of actual fun factor or technical issues.

Let’s be honest……..all these 5 stars reviews are kinda BS though. No one has had enough time to finish this port. So all these people screaming that it deserves 5 stars just because…..are laughable. I would give it a solid 3…….that’s including the technical issues. Again, so many reviews…not enough time since release to give an actual review. The numerous threads here of technical issues would contradict the nostalgia bombers.

Aside from a few gripes I have about the lack of explanation behind systems like how points lead to dragon evolutions the game is pretty fucking good - the sprite work is fantastic. the story isn't overbearing or absent but runs through the game, it isn't a particularly grindy game and it's neither too long or short. I'm also one of the lucky who hasn't had any problems with the launcher or functionality and my controller seems to be compatible with the minor annoyance in having to remember what keyboard key is associated with my gamepad, but that's ports for you

At the time of the game's release many games were going 3D so it lost some points for remaining 2D at the time but it scored high across the board and the systems still hold together quite well - If you've never played the game or its predecessor originally then sure, you're going to think of it in different terms than those of us who have but, like.

That's a You problem
