Okay, I'm running Win8x64 on an ASUS notebook X551CAP with a celeron cpu rendering with an intel something chipset.

I get a huge frame rate improvement in B2 by disabling optimized surfaces. The trick unfortunately is in finding a way to actually disable this feature. Clicking ADVANCED on the launcher gives you a check box menu option to do so, which turns out to be pretty useless in win8. Bood2 wants to use some sort of default configuration that's hard coded somewhere in the game and win8 has this obsession with returning everything to the manufacturer's settings. It's a perfect storm combo that's caused a lot of trouble with b2. Even editing autoconfig and detailHi doesn't turn off Optimized surface automatically. So here's what I'm having to do, please test this yourself.

Once the b2 subway map is loaded, do some editing of the detailHi file in notepad, set EnvMapENable to "0", and make it read-only. Load b2, and once the first map is up, you can see the light refracting off the chrome pistol while rotating the player model, use that for testing. Now esc. out to options>detail, switch from hi to low, hit enter, then back to Hi again. That gets you the Hidetail config minus optimized surfaces. Be sure to check the pistol's skin to see if there are any reflections when rotating. Once you're sure there aren't any, play through to test. For me, even combat runs at or above 30 frames a second now.

Some of you have tried this without success no doubt, I'm just hoping someone with windows 8 might benefit.
Update:

Looks like I'm having to force the modified HiDetail with every new level. Win 8 doesn't like non original settings at all.
