I mean, I'm sure I'm not the first to mention that, but, damn it's brutal.

Just wanted to ask if there's something I'm missing or is the Pitchfork usually the weapon of choice in this game?

That is just the default weapon, it's good against zombies and gargoyles if you can time it right, but you'll want to use ye olde shotgun or the Tommy gun (use bursts as the first one auto hits) for most situations. If you just have flairs, shot and hide, they are good against the butchers though. If you know there is a group of cultists around the corner, or a swarm of zombies, lob TNT.

That should do it in most situations, I'll let you figure out the hellhounds the phatasms and the bosses... good luck! =]P

cultist in water == bad day, use the voodoo doll.
Just out of curiosity, which difficulty level are you playing and how far did you get? I'm guessing you're still in or around E1M1 (Cradle to Grave) since you're using the Pitchfork a lot. I only play on Extra Crispy these days, but I can sympathize with your situation after all these years. Ammo is very limited early on and there's no guarantee that a Cultist will drop a Sawed-Off Shotgun. But don't worry; you'll get better as you become more familiar with the levels. Move around stealthily and strafe when necessary.

Haha, no. You should only resort to the pitchfork when you are out of ammo or use it on weak enemies in order to save ammo.
