At first glance, you see how remarkably cheesy this game can be. With all the quirky one liners of the other BUILD games (Shadow Warrior, Duke Nukem). The one thing that might turn gamers off is the ridiculous blood dripping right at the menu. Yes, we get it, the name of the game is Blood...
Then you start the game, and you realize the cheesiness has passed (for the most part). Given only a pitchfork and your wits to start the game, almost immediately you begin fending off zombies and crazed cult fanatics with your pitchfork. Grabbing a spare flare gun from the ground, you then get a cynical smirk across your face as you flare up one of the cult fanatics and they scream to you, telling you how much it burns until they fall on the ground and ultimately pass. This combined with launching zombies in the air with sticks of dynamite, then playing soccer with their severed heads... you realize how appropriate the game is named.
There is lots of excellent action and a great deal of humor to keep the old school FPS gamer playing. While it has the feel of a budget horror flick, the action is very impressive as you bounce from one fight to the next with very little time to breath. The enemies aren't the most original, blood thirsty rats and bats, zombies, shotgun and tommy gun wielding cult fanatics (who sometimes feel the urge to blow themselves up on accident) as well as Gargoyles, Butchers and hands that will choke the life from you if you're not careful.
The levels are designed rather well, many of them feel a bit too cliche for my tastes, but the action is good enough to distract me from that. The best part of the game for me is probably the arsenal that you can use at your disposal. Flare Guns, Dynamite, Plasma Rifle, and a sadistic Voodoo staff that just doesn't seem fair at times. Then of course there is some of the more conventional weapons like the Pitchfork, the Sawed Off Shotgun, Tommy Gun and a Can of Hair Spray combined with a Lighter. I also love how the Zombies and Gargoyles will have no issue turning on the cult fanatics if they aren't careful about Friendly Fire. There is nothing more satisfying then watching 3-4 zombies hacking up a cult fanatic who just placed a stick of dynamite in the wrong place...
The music again, gives it that feel that it is a budget horror flick, but the soundtrack is definitely fitting and at alot of times, encourages you to stain the walls with your favorite bodily fluid (which hopefully is Blood, or maybe you should be playing Duke Nukem). The sound effects are very well done, using realistic gun fire sounds to the cheesy "MOOOORE BRAAAINS" yells of the Zombie (I still think that Cult Fanatic is telling me not to run out of Sorbe).
In conclusion, rather you're looking for a game to help feed that sadistic urge to kill, or looking for something a little humorous, this game has it all jam packed in all of it's classic 3D gory glory. This game is definitely a... dare I say... cult classic.
