Frank412: Wanted to get into the game, but got confused by some details on the game availability and features. Have a list of questions that would be glad if someone can answer:
1) From what I understand Enhanced version does not have any "Restored content" in it and if I want to experience it, I should use original game (with ScummVM)?
That is correct. The Enhanced Edition itself does not have the "Restored content".
The Enhanced Edition does come bundled with the original game too, though.
The "Restored Content" is largely a fan made project, informed by unused resources that exist in the game data, and source code fragments that may provide hints of how some content was intended to be used. It's still work in progress.
Frank412: 2) The original version is mentioned to use ScummVM to run the application. Can I check what version of ScummVM is used?
The original version comes bundled with ScummVM 2.1.0 (2019).
The Enhanced Edition includes the original bundled with ScummVM 2.5.1 (2022).
Current ScummVM version is 2.9.1, freshly released on May 25th, 2025, and I heartily recommend using that one.
Frank412: 3) Does GOG keep the version of ScummVM updated for the original?
No, they do not do this for every ScummVM release, and for Blade Runner there has not been an update to the bundled ScummVM version since 2019 as far as I know. I do not know the details of how much control GOG has over this (within the frame of their game preservation project) or whether it has to be initiated by the publisher.
Frank412: 4) Can I update ScummVM version manually to run latest one?
Yes. You can copy over the bundled folder of ScummVM with a newer version. Just keep the name of the folder as is (ScummVM). For a Windows OS this should be easy, since ScummVM provides an option to download a zip file of the latest ScummVM build.
Alternatively, you could install ScummVM centrally on your system using the latest ScummVM installer for your platform. This would require to then add Blade Runner manually (and any other ScummVM supported game you'd like to) and launch it via this central ScummVM launcher. This would centralize the updating process.
Extra Note: For subtitles in Blade Runner, when running the original game (vanilla or restored content mode) with ScummVM, you will need to download the subtitles pack from the ScummVM website and extract the contained "MIX" file into the folder where Blade Runner got installed. The current version of the subtitles on the ScummVM website is v8, with an upcoming v9 soon to be released.
