Wow, didn't know someone would do something with Mechcomm 1. AI in 1 was better than 2. I remember getting a whole lot of enemy units to follow my fast mech in rings in 2 whilst my horde of light mechs blasted away at them. I'm sure it was hard difficulty.

Salvage was more rewarding in 1. Should be interesting if they can make mechwarrior skills accumulative over different campaigns.
Still sitting here watching the reviews march in. It's such a sad thing to have so many unsatisfied customers. I keep hoping in my dream of dreams it becomes a viable game. I am still disappointed in their ability to fix the 5+ pages of complaints. You would think they might actually play test a game before they unleash it on the public. I bet eisberg77 is wearing out his keyboard sucking up to the Dev's and thwarting the evil unhappy players.

The reviews especially. Most of them are so one-sided it's hard to tell what the underlying issue is.
Is there some kind of prejudice in between the lines? There must be.

When you look at this game it's not nearly what complainers would have you believe it is.

There are some things about it that I notice as well: for example, not being able to adjust the camera during an enemy attack start up. You're locked out until the attack is in progress and sometimes the camera snaps onto the wrong place. Game breaking? Hardly.

The GPU cooking issue. Most people just complain instead of making a LITTLE effort into having a play around with the settings. Turned off "High Quality UI", problem fixed. Locked to 60fps, thanks game.

Do I still get sudden FPS drops between turns. Sure. Is it a huge deal? No. Can it be fixed, probably and hopefully, as long as it's not too closely tied to a fault of the game engine (Unity).

What about the voice acting? It's fine. It has more character and energy than many others. If it's better than an anime dub in English, then it's good in my book. It's not a $600million budget hollywood POS anyway. What are people expecting?

A few games get celebrity voices and suddenly it's the norm? I think the only words suitable are "grow up". It wasn't long ago we had NO voice acting. Some of the most famous video game voices are from 'nobodies'.

Which leads to the other thing I've been reading about "walls of text". I'm glad it's there. No one's forcing you to read it. I enjoy taking a few minutes to read the details before proceeding because for ME it gives flavour and purpose to each mission, if only to satisfy my own immersion. I'm not interested in completely random faction reputation changes. I like to read that the local government is having an issue with a Concordant research base on its planet and is about to pay me 980000 units + salkvage to destroy it.

It's not reasonable nor expected for all of that to be voice acted.
Is some of it a bit 'samey', sure. Won't argue there. Is it reasonable to expect unlimited variety? No. I'd like to think I'm a logical and reasonable adult and at some point I'm going to do a "random mission" that's exactly the same one I did before.

Graphics from mid 2000? Well that's unfair and also in poor taste. Graphics can't have a time-line excepting technical evolution. Which is not a real issue in Battletech.

If someone takes half a second to actually LOOK at the mechs and terrain all the detail and high res is there. So what's the issue? Well unfortunately the game doesn't do itself justice because of its own scaling. The Mechs are HUUUUUGE. So you put it next to a tall pine that it's twice the height of... how much detail are you expecting? Per leaf shadows? I mean really.

COULD THE ASSETS BE IMPROVED. Some of them, absolutely! I'm not saying they can't be better, but they're hardly worth scoffing at. Going too detailed can also make the game a visual circus. As it stands, identifying mechs, objectives, etc is clear and easy. Sure the water doesn't look like I can reach out into my screen and drink it.... but it's not supposed to. From that altitude it arguably looks 'realistic'.

The only real argument here CAN be that we are not provided an opportunity to zoom close enough to admire a potentially beautiful environment.

Is it necessary to upgrade the assets? *shrugs*. Maybe.

TLDR

All in all, the complaints are pretty childish and short-sighted. It's a fine game, and not unlike others can definitely benefit from improvement over time.

But to me the most important thing about this iteration is that a step has been taken with the franchise in !!2018!! to develop a tactical turn based game in the battletech universe (yeah yeah, Mechcommander 20 years ago, blah blah blah). There aren't too many of these and it combines a few of my loves.

While I look forward to a new Mechwarrior game I also see this iteration as a step to a sequel, with a larger budget, more goodies and finer polish.

Does it make this game a steaming pile of apples? No it doesn't. It's very enjoyable. Perhaps some expectations are just too high. There is no patience and no wisdom in most of your complaints- it's unfortunate and sad really.

Don't drive the promise this game brings into the ground for petty, childish nonsense.
It does seem like most of the complaints are pedantic, but I blame society for not understanding just how hard it is to be a game developer.

Between people like you and me, who enjoy having more text in our games; more flavour to make the world come alive... and others who cannot stand to read more than 140 characters. Add a little flavour and everyone is complaining about SJW or what not.

Then there are those who complain about graphics... but do not care at all about art direction. Many games from 2000 had significantly better art direction than games today. When games had to actually fight to look different from each other, the one thing that distinguished them was creativity and hand crafted landmasses, filled with little secrets by the artists and game developers.

but eisberg77 does make many valid points, as does squid830 I do have to admit... one thing that interested me was talk of having it play very table-top like, and it is clear that has crated issue between people (should the game be table-top or clones of games other people liked that used the MechTech IP?)

I am trying to decide if I want to try the game, but these forums have not been much assistance in that matter.... as usual, the only way to tell if you really want something is to try it. The death of the demo is really lame in this respect.
After I wrote my bit I went back and played the game to completion and tried to take more notice of the things people complained about.

Yes the texture resolution when you zoom right in isn't brilliant. Is it a big deal? Not really, I'm pretty much max zoomed out all the time straight up vertically.

Are some of the assets are little 'dull', sure.

But again, none of this was 'game-breaking'. The only thing that sort of was disappointing was not being able to oragnise the order of the mechs in the mech-bay.

Beyond that, the game was a blast.

Merranvo- I am a fan of the Mechwarrior series of games- and I have never played the table-top version. But I am also a big fan of Tactics games and X-Com/etc.

To that end- the game was satisfyingly fun. I found I could get lost in missions for hours.
Sometimes it might seem a little slow- but apparently they're bringing in speed options for combat (movement etc).
The only catch is that the combat may not be AS tactical as it could be. There are plenty of ways to catch or get caught out, but beyond that some might find it lacks depth. It's hard to say.

I would say give it a try.
