WSGF mentions two widescreen solutions for the game:

Which one is the better one? One is apparently specifically for the GOG version.

All widescreen resolutions stretch the HUD. If you are OK with that then Hor+ > 4:3 > Vert-. Visual Explanation of terms used in Detailed Reports. You see less with Vert-, zoomed & cropped, than with a standard 4:3 resolution.
