BRJoker: What's your: resolution, videocard, videocard manager settings (if anything's changed) and DX components (via dxdiag)? Can you please provide this info, so I, perhaps, can get to the core of the problem (I know you fixed it but still)?

How to check DX components: Select the Start button and type dxdiag in the search box, then press Enter. Go to the screen tab and tell me about the last 3 accelerations. They all should work.

I had a guy with the same problem, who had all those unavailable, and that, I suspected, might've been the cause of the problem. I believe it's all mostly in the screen resolution and how the game reacts to it.
He already solved it. :)

Anyway the game's problem is the engine, it can't support non 4:3 resolutions. Most of the videocards are capable of switching video mode when a game not runs on the desktop's native aspect ratio or resolution. If this not happen it cause extreme screen tearing or even prevent running.

"(I know you fixed it but still)" (c) - Quoted post. Solved or not, I need the information.

Pretty sure it supports the 5:4 resolutions, can be ran on 16:9 too. Yes, on 16:9 it will be the stretched 1024x768 resolution, but the fact the PC will still run it is hgere.

I don't know why are you telling me that. I've spent around 7 years of understanding this game and am aware of the most part of problems and its fixes.

Resolution stuff shouldn't prevent the game from running, its the videocard settings (control panel) + resolution thing, that causes troubles.

Extreme screen tearing on 16:9 is obvious. Widescreen is not supported by default, as a whole. And running the game on High resolution Widescreen monitors and then complaining about the game looking terrible is a bad thing to do.

It is possible to make a proper resolution patch using the .exe file and, for example, webmoney. But ain't nobody got time and dedication for that. I'd do that, but I already got so much stuff on me, it's impossible.

Considering the revamped game will come sooner or later.
How can i change to 4:3 resolution ?

My resolution is 1920x1080 on both displays.
Main monitor 144hz and second monitor 60hz.

DX components (via dxdiag)
DirectDraw: active
Direct3D: active
AGP: active

I want to play this freaky game...

1920x1080 is 16:9 ratio, so you can't change anything, still should be able to play though.

Experiment with disabling one of the monitors: ("hit the windows key + P and disable the second monitor if you are using multiple screens and have only 1 up"). My guess would be to try it with 60hz monitor (thus disabling the 144hz one), but experiment with both, also lurk around your videocard control panel (AMD manager or nVIDIA control panel) and make the sure you have the "stretch/fullscreen" scaling option in it, so it automatically stretches the game to 1920x1080. Leave 1024x768 with 32 bitdepth in the .ini file.

Also you can try to run it with compatibility mode, Win 95/98/XP.

Extra- info from people, who solved the problem:

"I am not sure if this is what you are looking for, but in your main Battle Realms directory you should find a file called Battle_Realms_F.exe, I found that this makes the game run in correct fullscreen mode, even on my ASUS 24" Widescreen monitor.
I dont think its a proper 1920x1080 resolution but it looks just fine too me.

So might like to create a shortcut to this .exe and run the game using this."(c)

"guys if you are using nvidia GFX card go to NVIDIA control panel go to Display>adjust desktop size and position and change your scaling mode to full-screen, worked for me and i have 1920x1080(1080) screen... " (c)

"Alright i figured it out and got it to launch. Theres an option in the Nvidia control panel which forces the highest refresh rate possible which seems to bug battle realms (probably related to the fact that my monitor runs at 144hz).

Anyway i disabled that and the game runs fine, even at the highest refresh rate." (c)

Just change your desktop resolution to 1440x1080 or 1024x768. Most of the videocards do this automatically when you start a software that runs on a different resolution than your native desktop. Battle Realms is especially sensitive for this sadly, but I noticed Moto Racer 2 also requires this.

Vampire-Jekyll: When I try to play Battle Realms, I get the error message, "Could not initialize display mode" and the game fails to launch.

My current display is 1024x600 (32bit color).

Any suggestions?
sorry for necro on a old post, but i had the same problem and tried anything i the post and it didt work, i fixed it by disabling 1 of my two monitors AND launching the game from the "launch battle realms complete" in the gamefolder instead of launching from gog galaxy. hope it helps.
Yes, I did that too. I got a display error when i launched the game from GOG. I went to the game folder itself and the launch was good to go.
