Rysa: hey you guys,
this is not enhanced edition, due to legal rights - we simply don't have it
but hope you'll find it interesting after all :)

Personally I think the original has more charm anyway. ;)
That's the spirit we appreciate on GOG! :)

This is slightly off topic, ok, alot, but were you responsible for writing some of this site?
Have to say I'm very displeased when I found out that enhanced wasn't included, as that game was probably the only game I really wanted. I really don't understand why GOG they would put artwork from that game and even included a gameplay movie from that game when it's not included in that package. I'd almost call it false or misleading advertising. I understand that sometimes copyright can be complicated but either make it explicit on the page that it is not included or take the artwork and video out. I'm going to think twice before buying again.
This not enhanced edition and we never said there is. The artwork we used are ok, because we used artworks from Battle Chess (this artwork was also used in classic version of Battle Chess) and Battle Chess II Chinese Chess.
Difference between Special Edition and
Battle Chess Collection is that Special Edition doesn't have Enhanced CD-ROM.
We removed one gameplay movie, because you've got right- it's from other version of the game. The rest of them are from Battle Chess, Battle Chess 4000 and Battle Chess II: Chinese Chess.

To be fair though, I expected to get the Battle Chess I grew up playing too, which is the enhanced edition on cd-rom. Its not unfair for someone to have expected to get that version instead of an older one they may not have think have existed.

What is different legally with the Enhanced version that won't let you give us that version? It is a remake of the same game by the same company. Does it have something to do with the music or one of the tutorial voice actors?

Bump.

..yeah, I know it's a zombie thread.

..but I've got the same question. 8 years later. So what's up?

I installed the crappy DOS version (I bought here), started it up and asked my son if he wanted to see the game that Wizard Chess (from Harry Potter) was based on. Without even SEEING the game, just hearing the sound, he said 'Wow that game must be REALLY old. I stuttered a bit, saw the crappy graphics, and told him 'Yeah, it is. This isn't the good version. So.. When are we going to get the good version? IE: what's the legal loophole if the same company holds the same game?

..Oh.. and there's video online. The Battle Chess - Enhanced Version WAS included in the Special Edition collection, contrary to what someone on the GoG staff stated earlier:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sftgNAJBynY

Also, I could swear that this version worked all the way up to Win98 SE. I seem to recall having it on a Win2000 machine (non-NTFS), but I wouldn't swear to that without digging my old machines out of mothballs. ;)

I'm certain that I have the original CD on mothballs as well, if you guys need a certified image or anything.

We're not doing the game any justice by excluding the improved version. The original Battle Chess was notably archaic even twenty years ago, that's WHY they made the updated version. We're not doing the games' history any service by ignoring that fact. None the less, I have every respect in the world for what you guys do. If I didn't, I wouldn't have bought 300+ games (nearly 400) from you over the years. ;)
