Windows 8 or 8.1? BG or BG2? Have you tried running the config.exe (bgconfig?) and changing the resolutions? Also, if 8.1 you may need to download an updated driver from the PC maker's website.

You can try to download the widescreen mod from the thread below.

Have you tried turning on scaling in your graphics card's control panel? (e.g. like in the screenshots)

I also have 8.1 and was prompted to install DirectPlay when launching BG2 which caused the game to appear like a window in the middle of the screen. I had to download the widescreen mod and set the game to my native monitor resolution, 1366 x 768.

I have an HP 15.6" laptop with and AMD processor.
Try running BGConfig (as Administrator) and switch 3D acceleration from your current setting to the other (enabled/disabled) and use a resolution of 800x600 for a start.

Also run the game as Administrator.

Here's DirectX9, to make sure your system has all older components installed:

Never install a game in the Program Files. In fact, uninstall the game from there and re-install it somewhere else.

It can be necessary sometimes for older games to run in admin mode anyway, but it brings a world of pain when modding or changing the games preferences isn't possible because the game is in the *protected* Program Files folder.

I just had the exact same problem but thanks to DeMignon there was a nice and simple solution readily available.

Cheers DeMignon! +1 rep.

How come Direct Play is absolutely necessary in order for my PC to run the game? This is the first time I've ever been required to install it.

Wish I knew why Direct Play is required for 8.1 and it was not needed for Windows 8. +1 to DeMignon, I am going to go back and try his solution.
